How rudimentary? In theory, I suppose, just a knife if you've got an old bicycle tyre kicking about - cut bit of the tyre to match the bit and use a length of the inner tube to tie it on?

An awl, needles and thread or braided fishing line.  Or a Heat gun and PVC pipe.

For a leather mask or sheath, you'll need 1) a way to cut the leather, e.g. sharp knife, 2) a way to fasten your bits of leather together, so....staples, rivets or needles and thread, and 3) a way to make small holes in the leather for your rivets or thread, e.g. drill or awl.

I may try to make a simple mask using just a SAK that has an awl with a sewing eye and a bit of thread.  That'd be fun.  :tu:

Serious answer: good bit of thick hide and an Speedy-sticher... Pretty much what Stevey said.

I've got one, if you'd like to borrow it?

Actually, Nix is quite right, rivets are the way to go - easy to use and it looks great. :hatsoff:

The hardest bit is cutting a clean edge on the leather.

The hardest bit is cutting a clean edge on the leather.

Sharp tools, steady hand.

(And then use some sandpaper to erase your mistakes...*cough, cough*)

In lieu of rivets, one could assemble a sheath with 'Chicago Screws'.

(Leather and drill/punch not included)

Nice scores, David!   :o

I was down in Idaho over the weekend. I poked around in a few antique junk shops, but didn't find anything suitable.   :dunno:

I'll keep looking, though.....  :tu:

I just bought an Rinaldi axe...  Not the axe I was wanting for the challenge, but a sort of small teaser axe to have a fart about with before then.
