Thanks, Rob. Slowly, centimeter by centimeter, I'm finding a handle.   :D

There's a lot more wood to take off than "normal" axe handles, but if you consider you're actually making the whole handle from scratch, not just fitting the eye, then the amount of work doesn't seem so bad. Slowly does it, test, shave, test, shave, test, shave... repeat ;)

Agreed.

In hindsight, I think I could have been a bit more aggressive and split my chunk of maple with an axe or big knife first. Probably could have roughly carve the handle with an axe or knife, and then settled into the drawknife and spokeshave to finish.

Nevertheless, I'm enjoying the process, slow as I am.  Who knew that fiddling around with Fuzzy's tools could be so much fun for hours on end?  :dunno:

Only problem with splitting it down is the potential for things to go wrong with funky grain, unless it is perfectly straight. But if you could start with a billet a few mm wider than the large side of the eye, then all you have to do is leave 50mm/2" and work down to the smaller part of the eye, aye? Slight taper down to meet the straight part of the handle and job's a goodun. Easier said than done but with practice and skill what takes us hours would take someone probably less than 10 minutes.

Fiddling with Fuzzy's bits sure has provided much entertainment  :D

True. I've had some wood that split absolutely beautifully, and some that leads the axe in a U-turn. This piece does have a tricky spot (seems to have ben close to a knot), but otherwise is pretty straight grained.

After I mess-up this handle, I might try to look for a second piece of Maple or Osage and try to rough carve the handle first, then finish with the delicate tools.

Fortunately, fresh trees are being grown every day.  :D

I know that feeling, it's beyond words--

I don't mean to BRAG, but it only took me a couple of hours to knock up my handle (and it's got a flatter more challenging profile).... (Insert general smugness here)...

Thank you Speedy. Yes, I've hung it there as an example for Nix and Taz... and as a symbol of shame, if they don't get their fingers out of their bum holes and get to it! Less typey, more workey!!!  :twak:

I will say, that is a rather lovely handle, Fuzzy.

What tools did you need & use to take a square board and chamfer the corner?   Any action shots.....?  I'm not saying that someone else made it, no; but it did seem to materialize rather suddenly......

It's going to get worse for you...

I didn't even have any of my carpentry gear up north - all that's down south, all I had was an old surform I found in the shed and luckily some good quality sandpaper that took up with me.... and lots of knives obviously, but it was the surform that did all the work. I'm just a fast efficient worker when it comes to wood... I'm shíte at everything else though.*

I tried to use the Rinaldi axe head to 'carve' some of the excess off my handle stock.  Might not have been a good idea.......

Yeah, I tried that as well, just out of curiosity as that's what the trappers used to do, but it just slides about or gouges...

It's a bit trickier to use an axe head without a handle than I thought. I planned on using the head on it's own during the challenge--a few bonus points for versatility--but we'll see how that goes.

The head arrived with a useful edge, but I have not given it a final sharpening yet.
.....which might have been a good idea to follow through on before trying to use it as a carving tool.......

Have you got a small plane like a little stanley or something? Might be quicker using that to rough it out.

I do have a couple of planes. They might be great, but I've been using the draw knife and spokeshave. The spokeshave seems to be a good choice, but is a bit slow (which isn't a bad thing). I resharpened the spokeshave's blade, but as a result he set up isn't quite as good as I had it before. It's a fiddly little shave, and I can never get it set up the same way twice......

Lyndax is going to get a set of smart leather pants. Once I get her hung and well hafted.  :tu:
