Alox Pioneer with scissors and saw
on: February 24, 2019, 09:41:43 PM
greetings guys and gals.
so,a few months ago,i received my 1st Alox,a Farmer. my son got a Pioneer with Scissors.a model i planned on getting as well.
you can't not love the Alox, and i'm partial to the 93's. a thought popped into my head,"4 layer Alox, with Scissors and saw".
i was waiting for the Pioneer with scissors to arrive so i could do this, plan was a 4 layer, and a 2 layer which would basically be an Alox Soldier, which is also another that i wanted.
on to the pics.and descriptions.

2 perfectly good knives, awaiting my frankensteinerisms

2 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
pins punched

3 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
pilot holes

4 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
disassembled. drilling was a bit hair-raising for me,concerned about messing up,but after what transpired, that was soon forgotten.

5 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
stainless pin stock.i make knives for a living, and use mostly stainless so thought that i'd stick with that [merely mention that heres since i really suck at modding knives, much respect to the guys who do it so artfully].

6 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
the "Soldier" was to be my guinea pig for the trial assembly.

8 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
trial fit.

9 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
both with pins shortened.

7 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
assembled and masked, almost ready for peining.

pin jig by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
and here is where it gets interesting.
i made a pin press jig for bolsters and guards, and decided to try it on this project [yep,THAT clever].
the ss pins didn't "move" well,i squashed the scales at the spring pin of the "Soldier",decided i didnt like what i did and stripped them both out and went to brass pin stock.

10 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
peining under way. i didn't take notice of how hard trhe brass pins were when cutting, realised that this was a harder brass stock than i should have used, when the peining started cracking the rivets.

11 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
both are done here, rivets looking pretty lousy.

12 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
cleaned up the rivets with a cratex stick in the drill press. looks "ok".

13 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
a bit more interesting.i kinked 2 liners on the 4 layer. "but wait.there's ,more".

14 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
at 1st glance,looks pretty cool.

15 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
the Soldier isn't bad, blades snap, but i don't like the lateral play in the knife blade.my son suggested i make a set of Titanium scales. this is staying like this for now,i havent decided if i want to make the scales,or just change the pins. this Soldier will wear his cars proudly.

16 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
and now,the reason for this exercise.can you see whats wrong?

17 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
18 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
the squashed sections on the scales, and cracked rivets. i should have paid more attention,i could have annealed the pins.

19 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
if you did not notice what i did wrong, well, more wrong, with the 4 layer,it was inverting the tools,so the mail nicks faced in.
i had to redo, lined up some holes on my hi-tech polymer assembly station, helped in getting the assembly started.

20 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
getting there.

21 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
final layer.

22 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
scales and pins, and i checked the tool orientation this time.

23 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
scales masked,pins shortened,ready for peining.

24 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
25 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
26 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr
done.for  now? maybe,maybe not.
all blades snap closed, except the awl and scissors.i'm working the action on those, might smoothen up over time.
the peining could have been better, but this was a new type of peining for me.i usually pein and grind clean after.
i enjoyed this,i plan on doing another in the not-so-distant future,so i can do a neater set.and work on expanding my skillset with this type of assembly.
thanks for looking.

4 layer alox hit a nice sweetspot with both weight and thickness! You won't regret it.. Here is mine, not with scissors but with Phillips and mag

Looking forward to seeing your farmer X

Great post Humayd  :tu:  :like:

Great to see the whole process with trial and error.
With Alox I wouldn't dare manual penning.
But I see that even using a press is tricky.

thank you.
the peining wasn't difficult, just have to be careful.
i need to experiment with different size dies for the press, there's plenty of weight behind it,but the die profile needs to be spot-on.
