Would Teddy Roosevelt have liked a Buck 110?
on: March 03, 2019, 07:42:04 PM
OK, strange question, I know.

Yes, I'm asking for a very hypothetical answer. But this is MTo! We have the expertise to answer these crucial questions.

Here is why I ask: I came across a photo of a knife reported to have belonged to a former US President, outdoorsman, and conservationist, Theodore Roosevelt.

This knife is on display at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.

Yes, North Dakota is a real place. The park is actually divided into a South unit and a North unit. Both units are worth visiting. I did some camping in the North unit....nearly got trampled by some frisky bison there. While these parks are not as well known as some other National Parks, I highly recommend a visit if you get the chance.

But, back to our important question....  Here is a picture of the knife from the museum:

Now, I've not seen this knife in person. I can't find any more details on it. I can't tell you the exact size of the knife. I can't even guarantee that it belonged to Teddy. However, assuming this is all accurate and the above pictured knife did belong to Teddy, I find myself wondering....

Would Teddy have liked a Buck 110?

I can't tell for sure, but the photographed knife seems to be about the size of a 110, maybe a 112. I may be mistaken, but it also looks like this knife is a lock-back. Someone correct me, if it is not. I don't know.

However, when I look at this knife I think, "110". It certainly seems like a 110 precursor.  Maybe somebody here will know more about this knife, it's history, it's manufacture.

So I have to ask: would Theodore Roosevelt have liked a Buck 110?  What do you think?

Not a folder, but he was given a highly decorated knife the last day in office. Sold a few years ago for over $400k...

Presidential knives are interesting. The night Lincoln was assassinated, the contents of his pockets were preserved. Below is the knife, a William Gilchrist 6 bladed pattern we now call a Congress. Lincoln stated he carried the knife because his glasses had a bad habit of loosening, and he used the knife to retighten them. I guess there were no multitools around in the 1860s?

That museum knife of Theodore Roosevelt's looks to be a folding bowie, which tend to be quite big. The handle folds, so you can use it either as a long knife, or as a slightly more compact version when folded. It is, I bet, much larger than a Buck 110. If we assume that the handle is about 4-5 inches long, as would be normal for a large hunting knife, and compare that estimate to the size of the blade... it's a big knife!

That said, I see no reason why T.R. would not have liked a 110.  :hatsoff:

I know it is a fixed blade, but I am thinking he would like the Buck 119.

Without question IMO.  He commanded the Rough Riders and they were equipped with some very famous Bowie Knife ( Tiffany and Co ).  I believe he would have loved a pocketable sturdy blade like the Buck 110.  Certainly the humble 110 would have been much different than his fancy Bowie.  The 110 is a no nonsense tool I believe he would have been very satisfying as an every day blade for him.

Yes, it is very likely TR would have loved the 110 for his EDC pocket knife

Correction to my post above.  The Rough Riders were not issued Tiffany and Co bowies .  The knife Max showed is the knife I was referring to.  It was presented to him as Max states and quite incredibly done might I add.

I stil stand by TR would surely have liked the 110.  I can see him with it strapped to his belt on hunting trips, even day to day.

The only way we can know for sure is to send one back in time and ask Teddy what he thinks about it.

I will volunteer to be one of a team of brave Chrononauts to carry out this important task.

I volunteer Don Pablo to go with you.

He's young and likes adventure and stands a better chance of surviving into the present day to report back if things go wrong. Not that they would.... just sayin'....
