Got a knife making course gifted for my birthday by the best wife ever!

We started off with a damascus billet and ground some pattern in it. Then we hammered it flat and into shape (made me realize how much I'm out of shape). Lots of grinding later I got a really nice knife... yeah, I'm as surprised as you are.

Overall length: 270mm
Edge: 145mm
Weight: 80g (yeah, it is a lightweight)
Blade spine thickness is 3mm (handle) 1.1mm at the tip
Hidden tang is around 60mm
Handle material is oak that was in a swamp for a loooong time.

I'm especially proud of grinding skills, got that temper from handle to tip really nice and even and a quite pretty full flat grind.

A first I thought, God, that's awful, not very good at all... Then I realised there was more than one photo.

Good job... Your wife's fantastic!  :hatsoff:

Thanks guys...
This is going to be my go-to kitchen knife. Its smaller than a regular chef's knife but a good size to do almost everything. I have to stay away from too acidic stuff for now until it has some protective pattina...

I heard of people leaving a knife in an apple for 24h to apply an instant patina.
Would that work here too or would it mess up the blade?

I wouldn't know. I think I will take the slow route, use it daily, and clean it instantly after use...

Potatoes are probably the best thing to build up a nice steady patina.... So just peel and force-feed your family lots of tatties  for the next few weeks. :2tu:

That is a beautiful knife, the damascus design is just perfect!  Having a knife that you made yourself is one of the true pleasures. Every time you use it, you will enjoy it.

Technically, it is my 3rd.... I made a Higonokami 2 years back and about 20 years ago I made another one (I should dig that one up and take a picture). Though I have to say, this is my best work so far. The Higo is not bad either, but it does not make it in my pockets often (no clip, not oho, not locking), this, I plan on using every day.

this, I plan on using every day.

And that's how you'll get the most joy out of it

Knife making reminds me of what they say about sculpture, you just remove what doesn't belong......and many people settle halfway there in the beginning.

Your's is all the way done  :salute:
