I've grown really fond of the 111mm's over the last few years. They are too big for me to carry in pocket, but they work great in a day bag or around the house!
I especially like the linerlocks, they are just more robust than the slidelocks, especially in an outdoors role. I still chuckle at the look of that anemic flat driver on the massive Workcamp slidelock...
I have five 111mm's:
- Workchamp (my only slidelock) - general duty and travel companion
- Forester - in my motorcycle hydration bag
- Soldier 08 - in a survival type bag in my car
- Skipper - lives in the kitchen drawer
- Outrider - in my grab bag for day excursions
I will leave you with a few pictures I've taken over the years:
Workcamp:
Boiling some water with an alcohol stove:
Small pliers are useful to handle hot items:
Helping out around the house:
Soldier 08:
With the Workchamp
Likes to hang out with the big boys:
But lives permanently in my car's survival bag:
The Forester:
A long time ago I still had plans to carry it as an EDC using this belt clip. Cool idea, but... nope. Alox Cadet rules the pocket.
Now it's part of my motorcycle kit, and lives in my hydration pack. Spot the SAK...
:
The Skipper:
I saw a great YouTube clip about the usefulness of the marlin spike, and thought it was a good enough reason to buy a Skipper. I also like the serrated main blade and philips.
It now serves duty in the kitchen drawer, for popping beer caps, pulling wine corks, opening cans, and as a quick access philips & flat driver around the house. The pliers have come in handy once or twice. I've yet to use the marlin spike...
(The Wenger SI was my EDC for years, but has retired gracefully and is now our dedicated egg shell piercer for boiled eggs, if you have to know
)
The Outrider:
New kid on the block...
It will live in my Fatboy, mainly used for day excursions with the family, picnics on the beach, BBQ, and short walks.
You know you have a problem when you have to stash SAKs everywhere around the house and car!
The 111mm's might be too big as EDC for most folks (including me), but they offer great utility and robustness if you toss them in a bag and drag them along for an adventure.
I really dig them!
