Hobbyist hammer - 6 interchangeable heads
on: April 13, 2021, 05:33:11 PM
Found this one while looking for some other tools online. Anyone has one? Are they good for SAK modding (peening)?

I'm using Firefox. What's your browser? I remember a similar problem with other pics...

The "another way" works for me.  I'm using Chrome as my browser.

As far as the hammer goes, I have no idea whether it will have enough "heft" (weight) to impact enough to do the peening you want to do.  It looks pretty light to me (but as I said, I'm no expert, not even an amateur as far as peening SAK pins goes).

Yup, it's more interesting for the versatility, but doesn't seem like it can handle some heavier tasks.

I agree with you Greg. For peening it looks too light to me.

I have the same hammer, bought at Harbor Freight. Only mine has a bronze or copper colored handle, not the silver I see in your picture.

I have used it a little. I bought it specifically to work on knives.  I think the point is that it is for precision tapping. It's a hobby hammer, not a framing hammer or sledge hammer, after all. Good for precise little close work, and yes, the different shaped heads are useful. The brass one is for when you don't want to damage steel (scratch it, etc.). Plastic is for when even brass might scratch or dent something. This hammer is really for tapping and rapping, not slamming and pounding.

For the price I paid, which I can't remember, but it wasn't much, you can hardly go wrong, even if you only use it once in a while.

And, yeah, if it's over $5 from whatever source you're looking at, try Harbor Freight. I think it's $5 or less there, but don't quote me on that.

Agree with all of the above.

If you want something with more heft, look into the various interchangable auto body dent hammers like this one. I have a similar set and find them very handy to use despite never using it to remove dents in sheet metal.

I have the harbor fright like the hammer your like you are looking at. It is pretty small you might need a bigger hammer for modding SSKs. I use the little hammer tapping out barrel wedges on my Colt black powder revolvers. For modding SAKs I like using a 3oz ball peen hammer.

I would think it would be fine for SAK peening  I only use a 4 oz (114 grams) ball peen hammer for peening (it may be even smaller because I have had it for over 35 years and never have weighed it  ) if it is lighter than that then it might not be so good for it but I didn't catch it's weight

I see that Mike uses a 3 oz and that may be what mine is

Either way only one way to find out if it works for you :pok:

Mine is a 3.5oz ball peen and has been great for peening - I think that set should be ok - peening is a gentle and patient task anyway so I imagine it's better to go lighter than heavier.
