Svord Peasant kit build
on: March 16, 2019, 10:02:47 PM
The Peasant knife kit is only available to first class peasants, if like me you manage to convince them you are indeed a first class Peasant this is what they will send you

The blade, 5 pins, 2 screws, 2 washers and 2 steel liners

Steel liners? come on guys i thought you said first class?? no no no, not classy enough..those will have to go :pok:

Ok, now we are talking, another of those and we are good to go

My choice of handle will be wood and a bit of broken broom handle or a stick from the woods simply wont do, this is supposed to be classy remember, thankfully i have stocks of various types and decided to go with Elm burr (burl) i regretted that choice as soon as i started shaping it but decided to soldier on, i didn't find it very easy to work with as it was full of cracks and holes, tearout was a bit of an issue but got there in the end, i would have loved to have stabilized it but i don't have the gear for that so on it went as is

Yes my bandsaw table is filthy and i will tell you why to save anyone making the same mistake i made, a few years ago i read how to make home made wood dye using vinegar and wire wool, you place wire wool in a jar, fill it with vinegar and leave it for a few days, the brown gunk it produces is your dye, easy right? well i decided to give it a go, i got the jar and filled it, left it alone on the table, i came in to the workshop the next day to the stench of vinegar, i walked in and there was glass everywhere, i kid you not there was glass imbedded in the walls, yes it exploded..vinegar and bits of glass everywhere and all over my beautiful shiny 2 day old saw which was now all covered in flash rust, idiot boy here didn't think to not put a lid on the jar, thinking about it later of course its going to explode, a sealed jar with a chemical reaction taking place in it is going to need a vent  :twak:
Lesson learnt

Anyway...

So we have a bit of a crack problem here, i just need to cut this down the middle and we have two lovely handles, i decided to epoxy the wood onto the liners and pin them from the inside..a secret pin, i figured i should do this as the wood when to the thickness i wanted flexed a bit much for my liking, i filled the cracks with epoxy too while i was at it.
My choice of finish for this was CA glue, it brings the grain out nicely and more importantly it should hold together this pile of cracks, pits and wormholes better, i didn't want to too slippery so didn't go for a mirror finish.

When its all fitted together there is a gap at the rear between the liners, the same thickness as the blade, i didn't like that so filled it, as this is for an upper class Peasant i went with copper.

A couple of coats of CA and showing the copper insert

Interesting to note that when they stamped the scale it burned through to the other side, in the future i might try clean this up a bit, the whole blade is very rustic but i can live with that for now, i did buff some of the forge blackness from it though

and all done, i just need to give it a final clean up, a bit of tearout at the rear pin but i will deal with that later, and a damn good sharpening..this i gather takes a great edge so i'm looking forward to getting it shaving sharp  :tu:

All in it's a great little knife, feels good in the hand and a really enjoyable project but next time i'm going with Walnut  :hatsoff:

Wow, that puts the bright yellow plastic handle version I've got to shame!

Svords are great knives. Cheap (mine was $12-ish), and really easy to take apart for cleaning. But, I don't think mine ever had liners.
