My First SAK Mod! - pic heavy
on: March 18, 2019, 02:35:39 PM
Hi All,
Well I've finally done it... My first SAK mod  :D

It needs a name, so answers on a postcard please

Think I may have peaked a little early, as my other ideas for mods are far less complex, but here goes....

This is an extension of the ideas I had in my previous topic: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80606.0.html, and I'll also try to give credit to the other threads/people to helped influence my final product, as without them I think I would have struggled a lot more than I did!

So in the end I decided I wanted the following tools for an EDC at work (in no particular order):
Phillips screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Nail file
Scissors
Blade layer
Box cutter
Awl
Torch (nice to have but not necessary)

First thought was back to the box cutter idea based on the 74mm Exec orange pealer, so after getting a bunch of 91mm Saks from Grant (Thanks Grant!  :salute: ) and stripping them down, I set about griding a small blade to the form I wanted for my cutter.
I have a white grinding wheel at home for sharpening my lathe tools on so used that, as it also helps keep the temperature down.

I went from this:

To this:

To this:

Next came the nail file:
I had a 58mm Classic so wanted to put the file from that in as a back tool.
I compared to the 91mm reamer to get the hole position and tang shape, as the tang was tool long and was rounded on the file to begin with:

Just realised I didn't take a pic of the hole and tang after griding! But suffice to say it now matches the reamer's tang. I had a 2.2mm carbide drill bit which went through like butter.

Next step was to decide the tool arrangement.

More to come ....

Nice work! And the feeling of getting your own tool the way you want it is great

Thanks all!

Next I had to decide what I wanted where.
The phillips screwdriver made sense to me to put in place of a corkscrew, especially as I had a couple of Tinkers from Grant. So that went on the blade layer.
Unfortunately as I had a newer scissor layer, I needed to keep the hook so that was that.

Next was the biggest puzzle.
Torch, box cutter and caplifter/flat head screwdriver

Normally opposite the lite module you'd have an inline phillips screwdriver, but I wanted to put two tools there in its place.

I thought about milling the lite/phillips backspring to half its thickness (from idea here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80606.msg1878606.html#msg1878606) but then realised the tension would be wrong for either of the tools opposite the lite.

So in the end I replaced the backspring altogether with a backspring from an opener layer and a backspring from a blade layer.

The opener backspring I kept as-is (apart from rounding the lite-end so it didn't jut out from the knife).

But the blade backspring needed some more extensive modification to accomodate the lite module so it could close completely and still be as flush as possible when closed.

The pic below shows a standard blade layer backspring compared to what I ground it to.

This now allows the lite module to close completely. It didn't need to clip closed as it was going to be nice tight fit so I removed the clip from the lite module.

So my first layer is one liner from a Spartan lite, then the tools then a small aluminium spacer I made to go the other side of the lite module then a liner ready for layer two...

A small blade spacer goes in between the caplifter and box cutter to correct the thickness and maintain it all the way along.

My modified 58mm nail file is the back tool for this layer, with a thin aluminium spacer, then an aluminium blank for the blade backspring as I didn't want any more tools on the back.

Stay tuned

Right, layer two.

This one's a standard scissor layer with a hook for the back tool.

I'd have liked to not have the hook, but couldn't find an old style backspring :(

Finally, the top layer is a large and small blade. No mods on this layer either, but I put the phillips screwdriver on the back :)

After adding all the layers and liners I put the bushings on and cut and peened the rods into them.
I've made rivets before, but this was a little trickier, as I had to peen into the bushings without flattening them!  :twak:

I was careful not to over-peen and make the tools too tight. Think I got it just right. A drop of mineral oil on each joint and the snap is perfect.

The final adjustment I had to make was to the caplifter. I knew it would need shortening a little so it wouldn't hit the lite module but wanted to leave til last so I could get the length just right.

After checking, I only needed to remove 1.5mm from the length, so ground it down and repolished.

It's got a perfect gap now, and the box cutter sits perfectly against the side of the lite module.

Finally, I used my micromesh on some old scales that were attached to some of the donor SAKs. Credit to this thread https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80744.0.html . See my first attempt here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80744.msg1892280.html#msg1892280 .

Attached them, and here's the final result!!

Showing off the nail file:

Modded lite module (credit: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75878.0.html )

All tools on display, along with the clip removed from the lite module:

And finally, tucked up in a leather pouch I made for it :)

I'd like to say thanks to all those who helped in various ways, mainly in the referenced threads but also to the odd comment in other threads too.

The information and knowledge on this forum is pretty unique and an amazing repository of skills and techniques that have helped me develop my ideas in many ways.

So, cheers!

This is a crazy, crazy mod - So much thought, and so much work, and a healthy portion of skill thrown in.

Had to read it a few times to follow it all - Well especially the torch layer!!
It did not help that the piccies did not display - But eventually that corrected itself!
........ Think I may have peaked a little early, as my other ideas for mods are far less complex......
I  think you did - Well done - Amazing !!

Thank you! Yes, as I said earlier, I may have peaked.... Although I hope not!
I really like the orange peeler on the Exec so thought it was a prime example to model the box cutter on, and the grinding wheel was nice and quick to shape it too :)
