ICC #4

I use a Sharpmaker. I really would like the diamond and extra fine rods but not at the prices they're charging for them to be honest.

(Image removed from quote.)

Then on to the strop that I made.

(Image removed from quote.)

To test the sharpness I expect the blade to glide through receipt paper without catching or ripping.

(Image removed from quote.)

There was a specific injunction not to show shaving pics but after the receipt test I always move on to shaving arm hair. I expect my thin blonde hairs to leap off my arm at the touch of the edge. I can achieve that level of sharpness with the above kit without too much effort if it's a normal steel. If the blade will do that it will glide straight through food packaging without tearing or ripping and that's my real world criteria.  I can do S35VN or lower easily enough with this system if the grind has already been set to the correct angle. Trying to use the regular sharpmaker with dull M390 was an experience I'd prefer not to remember.

My tip? Carry a SAK. It's so quick and easy to do, whatever the system.

I have a Sharpmaker and it does very well for me. It's not uncommon for me to grab one of the rods and use it freehand, though.....

Day 22

(Image removed from quote.)

So i noticed a bit of vertical play a few days ago and thought it was getting worse, not bad for a locker but noticeable, after above picture i thought i better give it a good wash and i'm glad to say all play has now gone, it's now solid as a rock again
Great shot! There have been a couple of cool shots with bugs on various knives...all have been really great!

ICC #5: Twenty Questions

OK, David has just turned this challenge up to ’11’. He has donated this vintage Camillus 66 to the challenge for ICC #5!

Thank you, David!  :salute:

Loopcutter has posted some shots of a similar Stockman during the course of this challenge, if you want to see more action shots. This a sweet old Trad and well worth a bit of effort!

Here is how ICC #5 is going to be run: We’re playing “Twenty Questions”.

To determine a start time (for maximum equality of chance), I used a random number generator to pick the start time with Greenwich Mean Time as a reference.

Results:

So, the game begins at 0700 GMT, 23 July 19. Use the link above to see what time it is now. (BTW, I’m usually asleep at that time, but the game can start without me being awake….)

=—>  I have preselected a person who is known to whittle or carve with a small knife.
=—>  The participant who correctly guesses the person I have in mind wins the Camillus 66.
=—>  Each participant can ask one (1) ‘yes or no’ question per day and make one (1) guess per day. I.e. I must be able to answer the question with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ answer.
=—>  The guess has to include the name of a person and a reason you made that guess, e.g. "Dolly Parton. She carved wooden spoons for her family members." (I don't know if Dolly has ever held a knife, it's just an example.)
=—>  ICC #5 will run until someone wins David's 66!

Remember, no questions can be submitted before 0700 GMT. Once this gets going, I suspect the game won't last long. Pay attention to earlier questions and answers. Time your questions with care. And have fun!  :woohoo:

ICC #4: The Sharpening Challenge

I currently use a Lansky Controlled Angle Sharpening System with 3 stones.
It sharpened Soddy excellently  :tu:
I like it!

I'm sorry but cannot do the sharpness test any better with one and a bit hand only at the moment  :salute:

So I´m running into a little problem here. My trapper passes the paper cutting test even before touching it up.

Nevertheless here´s a pic of my stones.

My method:

I sharpen freehand, with stone in hand, and moving the knife towards me either in a straight or circular motion, depending on the state of the blade. I´m using 10 strokes on one side, then 10 on the other, and repeat, with one stroke less, until I reach 1 (actual times may vary). It helps if you´re ambidextrous; if not, stroke the other side with the knife moving away from yourself. Then the process is repeated on the whetstone, with a drop of Buck honing oil. I rarely strop but when I do it´s on the rough side of a leather belt with some toothpaste.

ICC #4  Sharpening challenge

If blades are real dull they get an edge put back with either a whetstone or a small diamond  stone. Then finished on my Lansky Turnbox. If they just need a touch up I'll either use the Lansky or a steel to bring back the edge.

One trick I learned is to use a piece of hardwood to debut the edge. You just draw the blade through the wood a couple of times when you are almost done.
Another Lansky system...not bad at all  :like:

Heres my ICC#4 pics

I have two diffrent ways to sharpen knives, whetstone is my main way to sharpen knives. First on rough side then on to fine side where I make circular move towards me bout 8 times per side, i really rarely strop knives when i do strop i use leather to do it.
(Image removed from quote.)

My second sharpening method is faster but not so good, only when i need fast sharpening i use this sharpener, it has ceramic and carbide slots for sharpening.

ICC #4 Sharpening Challenge

I use a DMT Aligner Sharpener.  It is a guided system that works similar to the Lansky.

Sometimes between sharpening I will use a small strop with fine compound, pictured here with the Girl Scout knife which needed a good sharpening.
