I prefer using a small hand held stone for two reasons:
#1 It is always in my hiking pack so it will be there when I need it.
#2 I use water on the stone and not oil. Water is easier to find than oil is.
I hold the stone and will draw the back of the blade upwards and to the tip.
I touched up the blade and it is cutting nicer.


 :like:  Better to keep a blade sharp, than have to resharpen it!  Even with my oil stones, I've switched to water and a drop of soap.  :cheers:

I think it helps keep the small bits of metal from getting stuck in the stone. Definitely seems to slick the system up a bit.   :tu:
