I love the traditional knives, but when push comes to shove it will be a SAK that goes in my pocket.  I can't argue with the fact that I carried one for 32 years and never wanted for anything else, or the flawless quality.  I enjoy Trad knives, but it's sure nice to have those tools.  Cbl51 is right, at least for me.
DAY 30 (FINAL)

Well it's been a month (ish) guys. 30 days. Weird for me. I've carried a traditional for years without thinking about it much. Case, Queen, GEC's, Northwoods, Remingtons, Kissing Crane, Lionsteel and plenty others besides. That's not including the ones I carried as a kid, I don't think I knew what they were at the time even. So what do I think about having carried this Buck for a month? Well. This isn't going to be popular but I'd already come to the conclusion a while ago that I prefer SAK's and nothing about this month changed anything.

I got fed up of substandard build excused in the name of 'tradition'. Of having to send new knives for a regrind before I ever saw them. Of niggling QC and problems. Of patterns that are so close but just miss what I actually want in a pocket knife. I know that when I buy a SAK, I get a SAK. It will have a blade and tools which are a known and reliable value wherever and whenever.

This CPM 154 two blade Buck for example. I drop shipped it for a full regrind (0.015" BTE) before ever seeing it, the reports had been of a thick grind. When I got it I used potassium permanganate to make the elk sides match better, carefully and gently rounded off the sharp corners of the bolsters and worked the main blade until it had the snap required. It's now a great knife, an incredible slicer and should be a true pride to a collection. But. Prior to that I had bought a $9 second hand Spartan, chopped off the opener layer and created what was for me the perfect EDC pocket knife. While this challenge was going on I made a mkII version, this time I had learned from my mistakes and the action/pull/snap is perfect, truly perfect. Total cost was $20 for the new Spartan and about 1.5 hours of modding time. I get my perfect blade size and combo and a package which is custom to my own requirements but which wouldn't bother me much if I lost it, no big deal to make another. I can dress it up with custom scales (I have wooden ones on the way from Germany now) and it is all that I need, all that I want. Moreover, if I want a similar package I can buy a non mod but similar toolset off the shelf for peanuts anywhere and it will be a 'sure thing' every single time.

I carried traditionals for years, always looking for 'the one'. The one which would be my carry for the next decade or more. I never was a collector. I tried different patterns, blade shapes and grinds. Then one time I did a google search and up popped a photo of a Pioneer Settler and realised that I'd been looking in the wrong place the entire time. I'm sorry traditional world. I've carried some beautiful examples of what you had to offer but it wasn't enough. I honestly believe Victorinox is and perhaps always was my solution.

(Image removed from quote.)

The Buck is for sale if anyone is interested. I hope someone else will bond with it in the way which I could not despite choosing this challenge specifically to see if I could learn to love it, I'd only carried it for a week and a half prior to the challenge.

Great wrap-up, Pomsbz.  :tu:

I agree with you and the others who love their SAKs. The August Explorer challenge starts in a couple days and that should be fun.

While I love my little red Swiss knife, I'm on the other side of your coin. I find the Traditionals to be better cutters than my SAKs, both by design and steel. For that reason, I often pair a SAK with a knife. I get the best of both worlds.

I am glad you stuck with the challenge--it's been great fun having you along--if for no other reason than you have been lucky enough to find your 'one'. Some of the rest of us are doomed to try a few more (dozen) before we get there.

Day 30 - A Buck Trio (small Stockman) has duty today.

I like traditional knives and have used and carried several models since I was 7 yrs old.

I was a tool of life, even carried to school every day.

However, time cause change, the world as changed, and people have perceptions that certain objects are bad.

Many of us have had to adapt, scissors instead of knives. Fortunately we yet can have both, by being discreet.

Today’s carry with my normal EDC buddy

This challenge has been fun, difficult to keep up with, yet fun with great people with good looking tools.

Ron Who - Day 27 - The Untraditional Traditional

With stainless blades and a backlocked main blade this Gerber Stockman is not the most traditional knife. However, I could not let this challenge end without carrying it at least once.

Day: 30

These are the traditionals that got me through this challenge. A huge, THANK YOU!, to McStitchy for supplying the Nº 7.  :tu:

Both of these have been great knives, each quite impressive. The Nº 7 has some great edge geometry for slicing, the Sodbuster (after a sharpening) has an edge that continues to improve as I slowly transition it to a convex edge. Obviously quite different, they both have nice egos and were joy to use.

I ended up carrying them slightly differently:

The Opinel ended up in a pocket caddy (slightly too deep for the Opinel, but it worked) next to a pocket wrench.  The Sodbuster seemed to work best in a back pocket caddy, here next to a AAA light.

Today I'll carry both to finish up the challenge.

This has been a fun challenge to be sure. THANK YOU to everyone who made this one so much fun and filled with great pictures, uses, and stories!

I'm awl for doing this again next July........hmmmmm....perhaps with a nice GEC or two........  :D

Last day, GEC 54 with a knife Grandpa gave me when I started many decades ago.  I wonder if Grandpa would have used those traditional pattern that I had the privilege to use this month, if he'd discovered them back then.

My sincere thank you once again to Dean and Steve for helping out with my 54, and many friends I made on this thread..really thankful to be able to partake in this challenge, and I gonna post after thoughts once I'm at the computer.
