I've completed a challenge and got a badge! Never thought I'd have one of those badges. Always seemed like such a faff to remember to post every day. Quite proud of myself.
Congrats on the badge :salute:

Day 30

Used today Opinel to cut throught duct tape, someone used duct tape to repair air ventilation pipe and we needed to remove it on newer ventilation pipe ways. Opinel cutted throught it easily.

Thanks all but heck, I'm just one of us all, good job for all and of course, not to forget our thoughts with Dean, wish you didn't have to deal with that news at this or any time.

I plan to make a bladeless sak in the future and carry that with a trad

I have the very same plan.

I've often thought it would be a good idea to make a blade-less SAK that was air-travel friendly. Could always be paired with a knife later.  :tu:

Day 30:

This has been a tough, but worthwhile, challenge for me.

Near the end I did come to appreciate the somewhat simple traditionals I have.  I can’t say I’ll be in any hurry to run out and buy any more, but I really have a great deal of respect for those of you that have carried these types most of your life.

After so many years of Leathermans and SAKs, leaving the house, at times, with no screwdriver blades or scissors was stressful. Haha. I’m not one that likes to carry multiple tools on me. So a traditional and a SAK or Leatherman is not my thing.

For ME the perfect carry seems to be a Pioneer X.   Has everything I feel I’d need. Wish it had a file added. I’m working on that. Haha

So for the last day I will again carry the little Buck 112 clone. It actually saw a lot of use yesterday.

The Spydie is just there to show support for his little buddy. Not being used or carried today!

Day: 29  (bonus material)

I made plans to go camping a couple of times this month, but fate and circumstance were against me this July. So it goes....

I still wanted to get out and have a 'campfire' in the backyard before the challenge (ICC#2) came to an end.

We had a big thunderstorm this evening and everything cooled off nicely, which gave me an opportunity for an evening fire out on the patio. I decided to light my fire old-school with flint and steel. Well, chert and steel.

(Image removed from quote.)
Top, clockwise: jute twine teased apart, steel striker, Opinel Nº 07, Chert chip with char-cloth on top

Since the Opinel is high carbon, I thought I might get a spark from it, but that didn't work, not with the chert, anyway. I suspect that the Opinel's spine is too soft. Or perhaps the size and angle made it too difficult.  :dunno:

The forged striker worked well though, and after a few strikes my char-cloth caught a spark and formed a nice ember:

I think you can see (despite the blurriness) that the jute fibers start to smolder quickly. I mixed some wood shavings into the jute prior to getting my ember going. Once the jute flamed up, the shavings caught readily and I was fired up.

(Image removed from quote.)

Nice evening for a fire. Lightning off in the distance for added a little atmosphere. Practice over, I need to get out and go camping now!

(Image removed from quote.)

If you know how it's not that difficult.

 :iagree:  Quite simple really.

Using flint and steel is 99% materials preparation. Which reminds me....I need to make some more char-cloth now.   :)

Well this went a little to fast. A little over a month ago, I didn’t even own a traditional pocket knife. I now have 3 of them.

Day: 30

These are the traditionals that got me through this challenge. A huge, THANK YOU!, to McStitchy for supplying the Nº 7.  :tu:

(Image removed from quote.)

Both of these have been great knives, each quite impressive. The Nº 7 has some great edge geometry for slicing, the Sodbuster (after a sharpening) has an edge that continues to improve as I slowly transition it to a convex edge. Obviously quite different, they both have nice egos and were joy to use.

I ended up carrying them slightly differently:

The Opinel ended up in a pocket caddy (slightly too deep for the Opinel, but it worked) next to a pocket wrench.  The Sodbuster seemed to work best in a back pocket caddy, here next to a AAA light.

(Image removed from quote.)

Today I'll carry both to finish up the challenge.

This has been a fun challenge to be sure. THANK YOU to everyone who made this one so much fun and filled with great pictures, uses, and stories!

I'm awl for doing this again next July........hmmmmm....perhaps with a nice GEC or two........  :D

And what a nice patina you've started there  :like:  :hatsoff:

Day 30
This challenge was fun and entertaining.
Thanks Jack and Barry and also David

I've learned to appreciate different blade shapes for different tasks  :tu:

Also, I love the more solid feel of my trads compared to my celidor SAKs.
There's something to it.

Today I've carried the Case Barlow around Sheep's Head at the west coast. I've used it for an apple and to punch a hole for a straw of Matt Junior's apple juice pack.

Ron Who - Day 27 - The Untraditional Traditional

With stainless blades and a backlocked main blade this Gerber Stockman is not the most traditional knife. However, I could not let this challenge end without carrying it at least once.

It's an improved Trad  :like:
