No doubt, Samsung is top.
But there's definitely a point of diminishing returns.

SSDs are so much cheaper than they were even a year ago. I paid something like 180 NZD for a 500GB WD Blue about 9 months ago; now you can buy one for $112. A Samsung Evo 1TB can be had for $245 now, or you can pay just $204 for a lower grade Samsung with the same capacity. :ahhh

I thought my SSD had become faulty recently, hence checking out new prices. The laptop would freeze regularly and a hard restart was all I could do. Searching revealed this symptom as a characteristic of a failing SSD. Great! Then someone suggested seeing if the RAM cards matched. They didn't, but pulling them out and reseating them seems to have fixed the problem.

Linux Mint here btw. It's straightforward and polished with nice artwork and I like that it's supported for five years. Like most Linus OSs, it's also highly configurable to one's taste. I've used various forms of Linux since the turn of the century. :tu:

From the short sessions I've had with it, Win10 seems OK on the surface. I'd be happy to use it if I had to use Windows only software. However, since I detest MS's snooping and control, I'd never let it anywhere near the internet! >:D

I'd switch my wife's machine too if I could, but the broadcast software we use, and several work/study related things seem to be very windows dependant.

Well that was a record. Shortest time it took Win10 to bork my system again. Last night, it forced fed me an update that sent my computer into a booting loop. Just re-installed the OS this morning. Going to see if there is any way I can prevent Microsoft from deepsixing my system in the future. I am getting tired of this.

make a system restore image, keep your files on a separate hard drive.

That is a good point. Got this down to a science though. It only takes me an hour and a half to restore everything back to where I like it.

a good restore image can reduce it a lot, plus it means you're even closer to 100%.

it's always nice to have a fallback image.

there's also the possibility of scripting the install... rather than having to input the setup info every time, it automagically does it, plus some other software installs.

not that I use any of this since I'm on linux 99% of the time now.

Currently battling windows 10 again. It really wants to install an update. My updates always freeze at 30 percent...and then it smurfs my computer.

I went into the updater and pushed that date as far back as it will allow.

See this thread and just wanna come in to join the chant.  I recently have my main hard disk die on my PC, and forced me migrate everything onto a new SSD.  And the experience has been nothing buy joyful, everything is easy and painless, and the whole process only take few hours and it's all up and running.

I guess the moral of the story is to store everything important on external harddisk, and follow the 3-2-1 backup rules religiously.  It really pays off at the end.

Does Windows 10 have a problem with your computer or does your computer have a problem with Windows 10?

At this point...it is anyones guess.

I did a small update with no issues. However I know that a larger update might cause me grief down the road.

Just a thought, try a thorough disk scan and probably a memory test.

Most linux live CDs have memtest. (better than using something that is part of windows to remove the doubt) or go built in:
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-check-your-pc-memory-problems-windows-10

disk:
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/disk-error-checking-windows-8

I know memory going bad is one of my top issues that prevented windows running stable (even if other OSes run fine) and Hard disk sectors going bad is probably the 2nd top issue. (as proved by wife's recent failure)

Actually that wasn't the issue. I rolled back to the previous version of Windows and still had the same problem.
The problem was actually the version of Java being too recent for the program I was trying to install (ArchiCAD 17).

The answer was to Uninstall Java. This allowed the install to go ahead and ArchiCAD installs Java anyway.  :tu:

Lucky you. I had to re-do everything 2 weeks ago. Got force fed another update that borked my system. Good thing I am pretty good at reformatting the HD and reinstalling everything. I guess practice does make perfect. Getting tired of this though...and am thinking seriously that if this happens again, I am going back to something where I am not held hostage on my own machine.

I can't believe how poorly outlook 365 scales on a full HD laptop screen at work with 125-150%

Like REALLY bad scaling.

Kept getting hit with the upgrade bug in an accelerated time-frame. I asked a keen friend that teaches industrial design and programming what I could do. He suggest that I turn off window upgrade.

Type in...

services.msc -> find windows update -> right click on properties -> find start up type, and disable it

I looked online and couldn't find this info, and my friend was like...yeah...just disable the service and that should solve your issues. Now I can stop the window updates that bork my system.  :woohoo:

I gave up on computers. I use phone or kindle at home (android devices).

At work we use machines with Win95 to Win10....too many problems to deal with in my free time.

Well that did not work. I am still being force fed updates. I just got a warning that I will be going offline in an hours time due to another one. When I tried to set a time to postpone it, it is grayed out. I am seriously thinking of going back to windows 8 if I can only find my installation stuff.  :poh:

I am sure this will not end well for me.
