Fixed blade bushcraft series?
on: March 24, 2019, 11:39:58 PM
Took this photo at Victorinox booth on IWA 2019 this month. It was a very center of Vic stand with new folders... is bushcraft fixed series coming? That big one looks actually very good. Kydex sheaths look actually awesome. I’d snag that big fellow:

As much as I'd like a little more choil on those, I'll still want one.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

There was a previous thread about them here:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80930.0.html

Sadly, no more info.  I'd love to get one or possibly both, depending on what the sale prices end up being.

I like the lock on the kydex sheath. First time I've seen that, I think.

Think it's actually a lock, or more like a tension adjustment?  We need more details... :ahhh

Either way, good eye and seems like a nice idea.  I love the low maintenance, slim profile, and excellent protection of kydex, but I hate how stupid tight most of the factory kydex sheaths are.  I don't need a sheath I can jump out of an airplane with; I do need one that doesn't rip the belt loops out of my pants when I try to draw the knife...

I wish they'd say what steel they're using.
I'm sure that a lot of people will see the rather soft steel in say a Spartan blade and assume all their blades are made from the same stuff. Presumably they're not. Knife nerds like to know how much chromium and vanadium and niobium etc there is in a blade so they can talk a load of twaddle to each other on forums...

They make it out of CPM-3V and I pre-order tomorrow at any price under $500

no joke.

Yes, the steel makes a huge difference. The edge retention and toughness alone of CPM-3V might make it the best survival knife steel in existence atm.

I'd be the complete opposite. No fancy steels for me. Just something stainless that's easy to sharpen and will bend or roll the edge, rather than break or chip. I'd rather have ductility and ease of sharpening every single time.

I will for sure, get the smaller one. Maybe the big one too, depending on price. Vic's 440A is perfect. It resharpens to a razor edge easily, and holds that edge decently. It's also soft enough to where if an implement gets twisted or bent from doing something stupid, it's easy to fix with just a small hammer and jeweler's anvil.

My favourite fixed-blade of all time is probably the incredibly ugly FKMD Panabas.
Seriously, if I was only allowed to have one knife in my house, this is the one I would choose.
It is an awesome firewood chopper and splitter. Hefty enough to be really useful in the garden, but delicate enough that you can peel fruit and cut veg with it.
Were I starting out as a poor student I would get this as my kitchen-and-everything-else-knife. No moving parts so it can't break. Stainless steel so it can't rust. N690 is easy to sharpen but holds an edge. The green coating is quite unnecessary and very ugly - that's the only bad thing I have to say about this knife.
So no Victorinox fixed blade for me. I already found my grail in that department!
