RH PAL 36 is what I believe I have.
on: April 01, 2019, 03:08:21 PM
I saw this blade and with all interesting blades I decided to pick it up and examine it.  I immediately liked the profile.  The weight was also very nice as was the over all condition.  Of the many leather stacked handled knives out there I wasn't sure what it was till I saw the letters RH.  I didn't see any other markings to determine if it was a WW2 RH PAL 36.  It sure looked legit but I'm not military knife expert.  I asked how much and the lady called her husband.  While I waited I examined the sheath.  There was some damage but nothing terrible if this is WW2 era.

He gave me a price and I left with the knife.  When I got to my vehicle I gave the blade a closer examination.  I could not make out any other markings on the blade.  I finally got home and used my Explorers mag glass.  I could faintly see the Made In USA mark just after the RH stamp.  I could also very faintly see what I believe is the lower portion of the number 3.

From all other online sources I looked at this appear to be legit.  I'll give the sheath and handle a bit of conditioning today.  I'll also get after the rusting and coat the blade with some oil.  I wont do anything else to this blade.

The designation means nothing to me, but this looks like it'll clean up nicely. Good catch!  :tu:

Aloha, the RH stands for Remington Hunter as it was a civilian knife made by Remington prior to the war. When PAL bought out Remington they continued to produce.

Good info here:

@ Steve  :salute: thank you.  The military forums were a great resource.  Interesting bit of history on this knife.  Pretty stoked to give it a very light wipe and see if I can reveal more of the tang stamp.  I'm not trying to restore or preserve this knife.  I just dont want to clean away its previous life whatever it may have been.  A very light hand will be used.

I wont be able to take a photo of the tang BUT I have revealed MADE IN USA much more clearly and a very faint 36.  So this in fact is a RH PAL Made in USA 36.  I'm super happy with this find.

Its warming now as I begin to treat the leather with some snoseal and the blade to Frogs Lube.  I've had great success with both so I'll use both.  I add a very light application of the snoseal as it does darken the leather as most products do.  I'm not concerned with value.  I am more concerned with decay and any further degradation of the metal or leather.

Good score A7.    :tu:   PAL made a bunch of them during WWII. I see them all the time on the bay.

Appreciate the info and comments.

@AW.  No I dont believe it'll be a user.  The rust that was on the guard area may have also be on the tang of the knife within the leather stacked handle.  I'd be bummed to snap it so a clean and preservation and I'll await new orders.

As already determined WW2 manufacture 6” fighting  utility knife with correct war time sheath.
Here’s some pics from one of my reference books.

FYI  here it is in wear during WW2. There’s other pics but can’t find them at present. Often with airmen.

Photo is from the USMilitaria/forum.

Gorgeous knife Aloha!!  My Dad, a WWII vet, had one that has long since disappeared.  You brought some great memories back to me!  I need to find one!

 :salute: to your father.

I was super stoked to find it.  Since I couldn't see much more than the RH I wasn't sure what it was initially.  I have since gave it a very light "clean".  I treated the leather on the sheath and handle.  I did lightly 0000 steel wool some of the heavier rust off the guard and ricasso.  I didn't want to do too much.  It survived without my assistance for this long.  I was able to see more clearly after a light pass with the 0000 steel wool more clearer the Made In USA and 36.  Boy were those stamping light.

It was a neat find thats for sure and thanks for your comment glad it brought back some good memories.

Nice catch! Looks like it is in decent shape as is the sheath. I have a couple of them as well as their smaller brother the RH35 USN model.

Good luck.
Some interest already I see. It was only $10 with no bids when I saw it. Still early days too.
