My newest Kabar: Got it at a yard sale the other day in kind of sad shape. Although the stainless steel blades were flawless, the back spring(which was made of carbon steel)was corroded from the celluloid handles out-gassing.The nickel silver bolsters were a brownish-black color from it as well. Figured I could re-handle it and save a nice little knife;and the $5 price tag was OK too.
The model is Kabar's T-75 which featured a clip master blade and a scaler/hook disgorger secondary blade. They came with yellow celluloid handles which normally aren't known for deteriorating but as always there is an exception to the rule. This is the smallest of three similar knives;the T-29 being the intermediate size and the T-49 the largest. I'm not quite sure how they come to these designations but that is what they are.
When I got it home the first thing I did was strip off the old handles which crystallized in my hands.Upon inspecting the knife I found that the mark side brass liner had a crack running from the center rivet almost all the way across as a result of the out-gassing. When the celluloid degrades,it attacks the carbon steel and the brass viciously but leaves stainless untouched. What is insidious about it is it can work under the surface without being noticed on the outside.I had one knife do that and it ate through both liners and cracked in half when I went to operate the back lock.
Anyway after a thorough cleaning with Mother's Mag Wheel Polish and some light sanding I got some Plexiglass I had left over from a sign job and made patterns from the old handles. I drilled a hole in each for the center rivet(the others had broken when I removed the handles)using a hand drill so as not to crack it and cut the pieces to length to fit between the bolsters. As I was going to epoxy the handles on I only needed the center rivet to index them properly.
Using my 1x30 belt sander I rough sized the edges and finished them off with a couple of different files and then sandpaper. I then filed the contours to get them flush with the bolsters and finished them off with 320 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper first dry and then wet for the final finish before polishing. Polishing was then done with Mother's Mag Wheel Polish. I was going to cut into the mark side handle to fit the small hook sharpening stone that was in the original handle but decided to wait on that.
And so is finished my refurbished fish knife. It makes a nice addition to my accumulation as it has the late style stamp whereas my others have the early all-capitals stamp. Here are pics of the before and after and of my other KA-BAR fish knives to show the various sizes.

Nice find!!

I've had it forever.  My father had it forever.  I don't know where he got it from, either from his father, who was I think was a navy pilot in WWII, or god knows where.  I'm 41, and I can remember this knife in the big safe downstairs since I was a child.

Thought I’d post my latest collection pic , what are your thoughts on the new USSF range , I guess it all depends if you like the colour. I think from a collection point of view they are important and a bit fun at the same time considering it was born out of an April Fools joke.
