Hummingbirds?!

The birds are going thru nectar like crazy. Between the Humming birds the Cardinals and Finches I am filling it up every 3 days.

The Humming birds are some noisy little birds.

Its two birds that I think are a pair? I believe they are Allens but possible Rufus? One has a bright red throat. They'll sit high in my tree and chirp as I do my chores and swoop down when they see me clear of the feeder.

I zoomed but it didn't help.

The birds are not shy about getting you out of their space.

Yet, I never have 2 that tolerate each other near a feeder, and it is all out war if a 3rd tried to worm in of a drink.

As someone else described, when close by it does sound like a light saber duel.

Its great to have them in the yard. On a side note, I've finally seen more dragonflies in my yard this summer. I was so happy to see them. We get a lot of mosquitos so having them around should help somewhat.

I'm quite late but I am still planning on planting plants for the humming birds.

Mine are still active and hungry. I bought a new bag of sugar as they as well as the others who seem to want a sip went thru the 1st bag. I've had a few bees stopping by but nothing worth worrying about just yet. I placed the feeder in the shade to keep the nectar from fermenting in direct sunlight and supposedly to keep the bees to a minimum.

Mine are around yet, visiting the flowers more than the feeders.

Surprising, at the flowers 2 or 3 will share the same flower baskets moving around the basket till all flowers have been tapped, then to the next basket.

At a feeder, regardless the number of stations it is one at a time.

In my area, I will have activity till mid September, with an occasional migratory hummer until early October. This depends on how warm it is north of me into Canada and Michigan.

I understood that in North Central Ohio, near Lake Erie, including Kelly Island, they will begin the grape harvest when the first migratory Hummers are observed coming south from Ontario.

I live within steps of an estuary 3Xs the size of Central Park NYC and under the Pacific Flyway. Its a birders paradise and we see lots of folks with telescopic lenses snapping photos certain times of the year.

Still very active at my feeder. Yesterday I heard them chirping away so I went out to check the feeder. It was empty

. I brought it in and gave it a good wash then filled it with nectar. I could see one sitting in the tree close by and when I put it up and walked away, whoosh. It flew in for a sip. I can hear them now as I type. So glad I got a feeder. They sure are fun to watch and they are ( I believe ) getting use to me in the yard. I've had a few other visitors to the feeder but they've not been back.

We'll hit the mid 80s today with night lows of high 50s so I think the birds don't have to find much warmer area to feed. I did see a hawk over head yesterday as well. It was circling for a while. Lots of neighbors with chickens in their backyards so I wonder if an easy meal was what it was looking forward too.

My Hummers departed two weeks ago. The the a wave of migratory hummers visited for a period of ten days.

And no more for the past week.

Feeders cleaned and put away till next May.

The regulars would visit flowers first, then feeders. The migrants will go straight to the feeders and then bounce from feeder to feeder for about 5 minutes.

Usually the last Hummers are seen till 9/15-20. This year right up to 10/01.

Active as ever. I know the answer I had as to the pair I kept seeing at the feeder. They were a pair!

I was picking avocados when momma buzzed me. I look around and what do I see

. A nest with baby within. I move way and quickly so momma can tend to her baby.

Pretty excited.

I feel very much as you say. I'm keeping my feeder cleaned and filled for momma. I can see her out the window now or maybe its poppa fending off others. Its very exciting to know that having this feed there encouraged this family to take up residence.

I can't say for sure but I believe a baby humming bird feeds at the feeder? I also watched as one hovered and appeared to catch gnats or small bugs in mid air. I researched and found out they do eat bugs. It made sense and now watching them hover and catch bugs in the air is really fun to watch. I'll stir up the bugs in my lawn then walk away and the hummer comes along and snatched them up. I'd like to believe it knows what I am doing. I also put a banana in my apple tree so that fruit flies will appear and make a nice treat for the hummers. I read that online and its worked.

I have a new feeder to add to the yard treats.

Presently I have a pair of Blue birds that have taken control of the two boxes I installed at the back of the yard. One has a nest the other does not.

I feed them dried meal worms daily. Now after filling, it is less than a minute before they are dining.

Awesome. Its nice we've had these bird year round. They defend their turf but every once in a while I see a bird trying to get a sip. We've had crows in the lawn poking around but they leave the hummers alone. I've not had bees trying to take one which I thought might happen. I do have bees but they stick to their flowers. I spoke to my neighbor and he said he turns on his bird bath in the morning till sunset and get quite a few hummers ( maybe the same ones? ) daily. They sure are some characters thats for sure.

Just in case they show up early, I hung the hummingbird feeder out today.

I'd hate for the little fellas to show up and not be able to get a drink or some energy.

We've had some good rains come thru but they've been at the feeder. I just came in from refilling and stirring up bugs. On schedule as if they are watching me, I sat to watch one hover and catch bugs. I wonder if its mom or dad or baby? Its so hard to tell who it is but nonetheless I'm happy they're still active. This year for sure I'll add another and see if I can encourage more to come. I don't want to start trouble as I imagine the pair I have pretty much claimed this feeder.

Heres a new nest I finally discovered. You can see either mom or a baby (?) inside. Im gonna guess a momma.

I also sat near the feeder to see how close it wold come to me. It has some hesitation but since I'm outside a lot and near the feeder its not quite as fearful.
