Notre Dame Cathedral
on: April 15, 2019, 07:58:57 PM
For those that haven't heard yet, Notre Dame Cathedral is on fire.  Majorly on fire.

This is an absolute disaster, and I hope that firefighters can get a handle on it soon.... although I think that too much has been lost already.

One doesn't need to be a medieval art history speSmurfpillst to realize how much.... well... art and history is stored there, and the loss to human civilization is astronomical.

I know they are saying it started in the renovation, but I have to wonder about the upheaval going on in France right now.

Very sad in any case.

Everyone in Washington is not American ;)

And I have absolutely no doubt that some of them would  not only burn the Declaration, but the Constitution, & for that matter all of Washington if they could.

It's sad to see the loss of history.  It's good that there has been no loss of life, at least I haven't heard of any yet.

I am hearing now that they are expecting a complete loss.

There will be no way to estimate what exactly will be lost, as I am certain some pieces were added to it in the late 30's and early 40's that were never documented.

Even the loss of what we know about it incalculable and mind numbing.  It took almost 200 years to build, and there is almost a thousand years of history contained in the structure alone, let alone the art and treasures inside.

I hope this wasn't a deliberate act, but regardless of the cause, humanity as a whole has lost a large part of who we are.

Palmyra, then the Brazilian Museum and now Notre Dame. Unimaginable disasters.

There seems to be no reason to blame anything but Construction related accidental ignition at this point from what I gather.
I can't tell you how many times I have been working on a Jobsite when it got lit up somehow by the trades.
Thankfully,so far not by me too!

But we will certainly come to know whatever they tell us soon enough I imagine too.

I hope the vaults under the building did not get burned too.
Jesus' actual Crown of Thorns was set to be on Display this Friday,Good Friday for example.

A sad day indeed, so much history with that building :salute: It is a world wide known building and an architectural masterpiece in itself :hatsoff: I hope much can be salvaged and in many years this can be looked back as only a part of it's history and not as how it's story ended

What will they do if it starts raining? I imagine that covering such a large building without roof takes quite some time and rain can't be good for what is left?
