Found buried in the ground but then left where it can still get wet:

Nice! I'm guessing it wasn't always a hatchet though.  :like:

Maybe it was an axe, but then it shrunk from the rusting.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Technically not mine. I should have taken a pic of it today after sanding the handle and wire-brushing the head.

Damn focus...

I honestly expected the handle to crumble in my hands when sanding as it has decomposed a bit... I think that is why the handle is dark too. I won't sand that off as the handle is getting too thin as it is. It gives it character too.

That's the plan. I might give the head a little soak in white vinegar first though.

Once you have done that you can't turn the clock back regarding appearance
How about oil the head first to see if you like how it looks, if not you can always go the vinegar route

The pitting on mostly one side of the head:

I ignored everyone's advice and soaked it in white vinegar overnight:

The cramps are just to make the container narrower so that I don't need to use as much vinegar.

The next morning I gave it a little scrub:

Next I scrubbed it with a wire brush, gave the handle three coats of boiled linseed oil (with the head getting the first two coats as well) and gave it a rough sharpen with a file:

It looks like the vinegar did affect the handle as it's very dark close to the head. I don't think it matters on this project but good to know for future reference.

That looks great. i love restoring old tools. I found a beat up old axe at a car-boot sale the blade was chipped to hell and the head was rusty not mention the head was wobbly. I thoroughly enjoyed fixing it up. I shall be posting it in action for my merit badge. :tu:
