Woodsman's Pal Alternative?
on: May 01, 2019, 03:25:56 PM
Seems that the name to the Woodsman's Pal has been sold (guessing Pro Tool Industries, the original maker, went out of business), and is now the Woodman's Pal 2.0 being made by some company called Skyline Toolworks.  Under Pro Tool Industries, it was always under $70. Fairly affordable. Now, they made some truly unnecessary changes to the old design, and it's suddenly $175.   The added features and "Craftsman Quality" are truly unecessary for a hardworking tool, and would only appeal to those who will likely never use it.

The price is way out of something to keep in my pack or in the bed of the UTV. At the old $60-70 price, I was going to get one for the UTV, but not now. Heck even the "premium" version based off the WWII Signal Corps issue was cheaper than $175. And "heirloom quality". So what, that term means nothing. We've got brush axes that are Councils that are still going strong, and are 70-something years old.  One of my favorite axes is a rehandled 100 year old Kelly double-bit.

The tool needed should be able to cut brush and small trees around the farm. Small enough to fit in a pack or behind the seat in the UTV. I'm thinking a decent sugar cane knife and a couple Latin/South American machetes would fit the bill--what do you think?

Great suggestion!  How are the Cold Steels? But an authentic Gurkha Kuhri is only about $60, still well within my budget. And a handmade work of art as well.  Guessing Gurkha for my use, Cold Steel for the ATV.

+1 on a Kukri!

I have a cheap Cold Steel kukri, and would not recommend it. But if you get one of the more expensive ones or a good nepalese one I think you will be very happy with it!

Have a look at Condor knives and tools.  Good range of cutting tools that's bound to have something that'll appeal to you.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Interesting. I have never seen them here. Most of the hand tools carried by the area Sthil dealers are pruning shears and saws (I believe made in Japan by ARS; they sure look like their stuff) and a couple of axes (Oschsenkoph; and a lot cheaper than their own branded version).  Coincidentally, I did an online search, and the only Stihl site they showed up on was Stihl UK. But I really like the look of them.
