Axe vs Coconut [Badge request]
on: May 12, 2019, 05:21:06 PM

I would also like to dedicate this badeg request post to Sparky415 :salute: , this Kent Axe is generously given to me by him, when I first start venturing out onto this board years ago.  Every time when I chop a coconut with it, I think of him and all the kind hearts I have the fortune to meet on MTO. :tu:

On the cheek of this Kent pattern axe, it read "CHIP CHOP No1", some research online has indicated this is popular model made by Gilpin, and Gilpin supposedly is a well known brand many decades ago, compare favourably with Wetterling and Gransfors Bruks as we known today.

Oh, just some random friendly suggestion, don't hold the coconut with your hand when you are chopping it with your stormbreaker(watch the video, it's funny), use a foot long serving spoon/dough roller to hold it if you must.  Anyway, you guys are probably seasonal axemen/axewomen, and probably know this already.

I see...I was just wondering the other day that must be the most confusing challenge sign up sheet ever--with people signing up multiple times, with funky axe names...now it make perfect sense.

That...I was thinking about the line of this:

An Ax to Grind: A Practical Ax Manual - Forest Service

"The ax head is brittle at extremely cold temperatures. It is likely to chip unless it is warmed before using. One way to warm up your ax is to place it (sheathed of course) under your armpit, for a few minutes. Or warm it between your hands. If you don’t want to share some of your body heat with your ax (which by now should be considered a family member), chop very slowly for at least 2 minutes in order to warm the ax up in the wood."

(search for 'brittle' in the following manual)
https://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf99232823/pdf99232823Pdpi72pt06.pdf

Nonetheless, I'd be careful, shouldn't be dropping anything sharp in the first place.  :D

I think he means why doesn't it look like what we think a coconut looks like... do you buy them like that? What has been done to them? The shell peeled off?  :dunno:

:iagree:   with Mr sixty-niner here... :D

The brown version is just more a matured one, the one you seen in my photo is actually a trimmed down version from a young, green coconut.(which is commonly seen in Asia)
