best way to replace scales?

I have some stayglow scales on the way.  Any tips on taking the old off and putting the new on?

There are some tips over on SOSAK, but I find the best way is to use another SAK's can opener and to gently pry the scales off by inserting the can opener in the toothpick and tweezer slots.  The new ones should just pop on.

Def made an excellent article over at SOSAK online. To summarize, you need another SAK to do it his way! You take the toothpick/tweezer out and use the can opener to get it out! I am going out for dinner now, but someone should be able to explain it better!

With the same idea I tend to use the small blade, you can then insert the blade from one side all the way to the other and then pop the scale off.  Check there is no bits of the old scale left on the brass rings before you then press the new scales in place.

If you're not planning on reusing the scales then just about anything wedged into the toothpick/tweezers slot and levered will do nicely. Once you've popped it off the first rivet just grab it and yank.  I like to use the small screwdriver on a LM P$4

If they're new scales you can just pop them on.  If they're used then you may wish to use a tiny blob of glue on the top of each bushing.

Center the new scales on the rivets, then place in well padded vise and gently apply pressure till they seat completely.

What Tim/Felinevet said, and I would use a good epoxy on the new scales. Just be careful to not get any into the places for the outside tools; toothpick, tweezers, pen, etc.

I can't see why epoxy would be needed on new scales TBH.  With new scales, they will be just as secure and as solid as if it had come straight out of the factory.

I would definitely not use epoxy (or any adhesive) with new scales. Not necessary and will make it very difficult to remove if you ever want to change them. Adhesive is only needed for used scale replacement, then I would use GOOP since it will hold well but pliable enough to remove if necessary.
