Fall Follow-up Fixed Blade 30-day Challenge
on: May 23, 2019, 04:34:13 PM
Arrrrrgh!

I’m setting up a Fall Follow-up Fixed blade challenge for 01-30 September. Choose yer knife and get ye ready!

Last February we ran a 30-day Fixed Blade challenge.  Those of us who did the challenge had a lot of fun and really enjoyed carrying our simple, old-school, reliable, fixed-blade knives. The February challenge was fun, but it was a Winter challenge which may have limited the outdoor uses a bit, I have a feeling a Fall challenge could be even more fun.

February Fixie Challenge

We’re starting this challenge thread well in advance so that MTo’ers can sign up and pencil it in to their calendars. Sound off if you are interested...and let's get this one in the books!

Folders are great, convenient, and, socially speaking, a bit more acceptable, but there is just something special about a fixed blade knife.  I think the February challenge demonstrated that well. After that challenge was done, a bunch of us knew we would want to run it again, and some people who couldn’t do the February challenge wanted to join in a later follow-up fixie challenge. September was suggested, and this challenge was hatched.

Rules:

1. Post a picture of a fixed blade knife for 30 consecutive days, starting on 01 September 2019.  That’s it.   :tu:

There are no size restrictions or limitations, it just has to be a knife that isn't a folder. (Save those machetes and cutlasses for another challenge, however, this is a knife challenge.)

Use your fixed blade knife as often as you can. Carry it when you can. However, please, don’t break any local laws by carrying a prohibited knife where you might get arrested. If you do get arrested, a few shots from jail will count as your daily posts. Post when you can.

Do let us know how that knife is working for you. When could you carry it?  And when could you not carry it?  (Because not being able to carry a knife or tool is a serious limitation of that tool, in my opinion.) What do you like or dislike?  Most of awl, join in and have a little fun.

Don’t have a fixed blade EDC knife? This may be an opportunity to fix that. Get one and run the challenge!

Some potential participants may worry about being limited to using just a fixed blade knife for 30 days. Don’t sweat it. I’ll be carrying the same fixed blade every day, all day, morning to night. That’s the way I roll in a challenge. But, I'll likely carry a SAK as well—I don’t like to be caught without my T&T.  :D  Carry whatever you need to, but the fixie should be your primary tool.

So, use those fixies as much as possible, but if the fixed blade knife can't do the job and another tool is required, explain in a post why your fixie wasn't up to the job. Such feedback and experience may help other people make informed tool choices later on.

Pretty simple challenge. But, then, fixies are pretty simple tools. And fun!

  Do I have to stick with one, or I could rotate between a few...I got lured into Choptober, and now this...man, this is a new level of enabling altogether.

Comis, you can rotate between Fixies. Not a problem. For my part I like to stick with one and see how it does over a month. Plenty of guys will be switching between fixies to suit their needs and get some experience with different knives. Always nice to hear how your different knives compare.   :tu:

RF52, glad to see you back!

It's an American-made Puukko. Which means it's not a real Puukko, just someone's interpretation of a Puukko. And....right now....it's just a dream.......

The issue here is that the maker was having a hard time getting the 52100 steel that was requested. Then he got a bit back logged. (And now I wonder if he remember that he still has to make it for me.......)

I thought I'd send him another email at the end of June. I'll ask him if it will be ready by the end of August.  Last time I asked he said "soon", but that was a couple months ago.....

Sorry to hear that, I love Puukko knives, especially those with true scandi grinds, sometimes they might not be best for kitchen chore, but definitely my favorite for outdoor/camping/bushcraft use.

I think that's the dilemma about ordering from a custom maker/small production house, the item could be unique and personalized, but the long anticipation could be frustrating.

Very true.

And I'm not actually as frustrated as I might sound. I'm still hopeful that I'll receive the new 'Puukko' in time for this challenge. If not, I have options... :tu:
