Day 1

I own two Explorers, got them around the same time. One brand new with the latest version of the magnifier and and a used one with the old, grey one. I actually never carried the new one, it just sits in the collection box, but this, the black one has been with me in my bag occasionally, this one's my user. Four layer is a bit thick for pocket carry for my taste, but I really like the tool combination of the Explorer. It will be interesting to see if I can get used to it.

At 4 layers, the Explorer is thicker than I normally carry, but I am looking forward to this challenge to see if I really notice the difference.

It sounds like you really want one of the discontinued Woodsman.  The 5 layers make it bigger than I like for edc, but nice for camping or more rural travel.

I've learned I can get used to carrying a Swiss Champ, but in general I like 4 or fewer layers. I think the Woodsman might be a great SAK for me, if perhaps a bit large.

Feels great to have a SAK back in my pocket after the Trad challenge!  Nice start so far, guys.  :tu:

The Woodsman is a sweet knife, but for me I found that I might just as well carry the Swisschamp.

Here is my carry for the Challenge, a newer Explorer that I replaced the scales on some time back.

Day:1

Last night I got my old school Explorer cleaned and sharpened up. Added some new scales for good measure.

Today I used it to open a new recycle bin that arrived today

Day: 01

Off and running!

Used the scissors today (boy did I miss me scissors during the traditional challenge!) during a sewing project.

The project was to make a "Snapsack". This is a 16th Century bit of luggage used by soldiers, trapper, pioneers, etc.....  Mine was a little fancier and made with more modern materials, but the concept is basically the same: a shoulder bag.

Details here:

Show content

In the summer I need extra water when hiking. I often carry a backpack with extra water, but little else. The backpack often seems like more bag than I need and tends to be hot and sweaty. I thought it might be a good idea to make a small bag that could carry a lot of water--hence the Snapsack.

This bag was made from the leg of a worn-out old uniform.  I used some brass hardware to attach some webbing. A snap buckle to make it adjustable. It's a pretty simple set up.

The test load:  2.5 Liters of water, a Sierra cup, and a mini-survival kit. There was still room for a light rain jacket......which might have been a good idea today..... [read on]

The bag is held shut and hung with a simple Prusik knot. The bottom of the strap is attached with a brass snap hook.

Obviously, having made the snapsack, I had to test it out, so I went for a hike in the hills. As I started to climb, a thunder storm rolled in.......

I managed to work my way up and over the hill I was on before the lightning became uncomfortably close. A little break for water and a glamor shot of the Explorer with the rest of the gear:

I did end up getting a little wet, but on a warm day that is not exactly unwelcome.  :D

(I liked my little bag so much, that I'm planning on making another version with a few extra features. Might get to complete that before the end of the challenge. If so I'll post up my revised Snapsack.)

Looks to be another good challenge month with each of the team sharing their experiences with their Explorers.

I do not have this model and will sit back and enjoy AWL of the exploits shared in this thread.

Also, I am a bit weary, having completed 5 challenges in 4 months.

Have a great month Exploring the Explorer.

Day 1

The first order of business was determining if the Explorer fit in my pocket organizer without removing the lighter.  It is a tight fit, but does fit as I normally carry it which makes me very happy.

I like to occasionally change the color of the lanyards on my flashlights and knives and used the Explorer for cutting the paracord.

Day 1: Before taking a photo of this casting for another forum; I recalled that it seemed to have an opening hood; so I used the toothpick to try to jimmy it open. It didn't'; so I decided not to mess with it any further.

Thanks.  I tried several different styles before finding this one, which I really like.  It is made of repurposed paraglider material which makes it lightweight yet surprisingly durable.
