OK, so what type of cheese are you guys using?  Also; sliced or grated?  I am definitely having one for lunch today BTW.

Doesn't have to be "wee" but definitely a "toastie".  Does suggest a sealed sandwich made in a toastie maker though.

(Image removed from quote.)

I use one of those to make bean'n'bite sandwiches with nut bread. Yum!

Yes please... i would LOVE a WEE TOASTIE.

You have my address. :pok:  Make sure it's warm. :poke:
Sync. Just don't. Please.

Check out what Fuzzy means by wee - it doesn't just mean small over here.  :D

If, after discovering it's other meaning you still want fuzzy to send you one, then by all means continue with my blessing. No judgement here.

Great answers all - thanks  :salute:

Here in Albion we have 'cheese on toast' which is toasted bread with cheese on top melted under a grill - that's what got me thinking about the UK/US difference - you call grilling broiling don't you?

A cheese toastie is what we call your grilled cheese sarny

Now I want one.

It can be any type of cheese that you like as long as it is one that melts well.  You can even use more than one type if desired on the same sandwich.  Slices work well because they help make sure that every bite is cheese filled.  Even American cheese works well and is even preferred by some because of how well it melts.  Whatever cheese you choose, do not skimp on the amount of cheese.

Nix - I’ve always used better, but I don’t see why oil wouldn’t work.

That is what we call Broiling here but again I have never seen or considered making one that way but others evidently have.

That wold be more like Toasted Cheese to me unlike the Grilling right on a heated metal surface from below,Wee or otherwise!

Hey if the only tool you have Broils then Broil to melt the Cheese it should be! :gimme:

And Mags another great observation about the phrase "Wee" but to clarify further one might use the term "WeeWee"?!

Not to put too fine a point on this of course. :pok:

I am familiar with both uses of the word wee, however I expected everyone would keep their mind out of the gutter.  :twak:

The word "grill" to me has usually meant grilling something in the oven, where only the top elements are used.
However I believe it comes from the food being on a grill(rack) which traditionally was over a fire, so the heat came from beneath.
So is it still a grill if it is solid?

The word broil... I'm surprised at it's meaning as it sounds like boil...

American Cheese sounds like what I call plastic cheese.  :pok:

Fuzzy and I live in the gutter. I thought that was evident.

I did live in the gutter, but I rose to prominence in the 90s. I do, however, still like to visit the gutter frequently for my own sordid reasons.

In the US, what you are describing would be called "broiling".

And the US is in a bit of a pickle with it's multiple meanings of the word "grill", true. But, as Butch pointed out, we like pickles!

So, yes, a hot, solid, flat piece of metal is called a "grill", especially if found in a restaurant, e.g. a diner.  But a metal rack or grate sitting over some sort of heat source, typically burning wood, charcoal, or propane, is also called a "grill".

(Now, no one bring up the confusing topic of the "BBQ". Please.)

And, Sync, 'American Cheese' is real cheese.   It is rather more processed than some other cheeses, e.g. Cheddar, but it is a great cheese to use for melting in a sarny, sammie, grinder, or Philly Cheese steak.  Let's be honest here, all cheese is processed to a degree. I made some Indian Paneer last week, just about as simple as a cheese can get, but it's still processed. American cheese is just processed better:D

Of course, when it comes to the stuff sold as "American Cheese Food"......you may have a leg to stand on there.......  :surrender:
