Vic mod version 3 (or 4 or 5..)
on: May 31, 2019, 06:12:19 PM
I had support vic having no knives or openers. Plan is to build EDC now that does not require other tools to be carried.

Start situation, I have parts.

Again to parts, start to sand aluminium scales. I do rough looking scales, still take of sharp edges so good to handle.

I have no ball point hammer so had to do that for peening as well (what a beauty). Sledgehammer used as anvil.

If it works, it works.  :tu:
And if I had to choose between a ball peen hammer OR a heavy flat iron thing to use as an anvil, I would always pick the heavy flat iron thing.  :tu:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

And there it is, I could say most ugly mod I have seen. But set of tools is great. Have to say I would not do peening with hammer if having good looking scales. But confident it will keep tool together.

Maybe carry some time and see. Next vic mod if starting to do some day I target actually good looking mod

So used flat surface from sledgehammer and ball point hammer was that other thing

Tx for comments. To make it uglier I added layer of black silicone in top of aluminium. It sits very tight but I think it won't last ages.

Anyway now testing optimal EDC SAK. This has quite same tools as deluxe tinker. One more back tool, one more layer adding magnifier and inline philips (total 5 layers). And 20g more weight compared deluxe tinker.

Again super tinker has no plier layer and it is about 40 gram lighter then deluxe. Again swisschamp is about 45 gram heavier then this mod. Again victorinox explorer is between tinker and super tinker. So noticed this is explorer with pliers and cork screw replaced with small flat. So quite same as adding smaller flat to cork screw.

So during this process I think I crarified my favourite SAKs. Ecplorer and champ. But there is still one more from wenger line that victorinox has. S557 weight 128g. Shorter and replace magnifier with wrench. And adding pliers compared to explorer.

S557 is the model I end up returning to. As smaller model it does bring more tools in same weight. Quite close to deluxe tinker in weight but more tools.

But as I like inline philips my top list is S557, explorer and champ. But now carry a mod for a while. Starting to think champ is not too heavy EDC. Anyway it has lot of tools upon S557.

So my list,
Explorer (about 100g)
S557 (about 130g)
This mod (about 140g)
Champ (about 190g)

To take this further, I have already heavy carries. So optimal thing to do is add light carry to rotation when want to carry light. So add explorer to long term purchase list.. Basically only light carry upon keychains I have is a pioneer (well, often see there might be use for lot of tools).

Carried a while now and quite much like the set of tools. It is not huge size difference to champ. Quite much most thick layers (pliers and phillips / magnifier). But very nice to use. Not too small for my big hands.
