Skeletool CX - A Simple Modification
on: June 01, 2019, 04:31:31 PM
Okay, not a particularly difficult mod, but still.
Meet my 1st generation Skeletool CX, with the original combo blade. I've never been a big fan of the CX combo style blades, so I decided (having been bitten by the EDC bug) to change out the combo for a newer style plain-edge blade and have what I consider to be a more useable multitool.
It was time to open my wallet, clear out the corpses of moths long gone, and I started collecting what I needed.
I ordered 2x T8 Torx drivers and a little bottle of blue threadlocker from my friendly worldwide auction site. Also, and without this the mod would have been a bit pants, a new CX PE 154cm blade from our very own Loki.
Everything turned up nicely. The drivers and threadlocker came in little unmarked baggies, and being honest  weren't that exciting to open. The blade turned up in a fairly plain baggy covered in Russian Federation postage stamps. Inside the baggy was a very well wrapped blade, and a stunning postcard showing the Great Palace and Grand Cascade in Peterhop, Saint Petersburg, Russia. A little thing in the grand scheme of things, but a lovely piece of personal customer service.
Photo #1 - Get the bits together.
Photo #2 - Carefully turn the blade side T8 while holding the opposite side T8 still.
Photo #3 - Remove the steel & nylon washers, and be careful not to lose the screw off your desk. Don't ask.
Photo #4 - Carefully wiggle the old blade off its pivot.

Photo #5 - Fit the the new blade while remembering the sharp edge faces uppermost. Again, don't ask.
Photo #6 - Assemble the screw, steel washer & nylon washer, and get the threadlocker ready.
Photo #7 - Dab a tiny drop of threadlocker onto the threads in the pivot, and fasten the screw and washers down carefully. There's a flat spot on the edge of the steel washer that allows it to clear the frame. Tighten the screw unti you're happy with the smoothness of the open/close movement.
Photo #8 - Put the Skeletool off to one side, and leave it for a few hours for the threadlock to harden.
A simple mod, but I'm very satisfied with the result. The CX used to live in my drawer, but now I have another MT for my EDC rotation.

Congrats on your badge and the MOD.  I really like my Skele CX.  It took me a while to bond with the Skele but man have I.  Wishing you lots of milage on that blade.
