Russian Cossack Sabre (Shashka)
on: June 06, 2019, 07:25:58 AM
Hi,

I have been offered to buy a Russian Cossack Sabre (Shashka).
Now I know nothing about these. What is the tell tale signs to know if it is a reproduction?

It is in excellent condition which made me think maybe it could be a reproduction.
I'll add some photos but I have no idea so I wanted to ask here.

Thanks,

Wow, looks great! Wish I could help you. It looks legit. Usually, fakes don't look that worn out and used. Still, not a valid opinion, just my gut feeling.

I dont know much about shashka but I did do a little bit of google-fu and came up with an old auction listing for one from the same year with many of the same markings.

https://auction.catawiki.com/kavels/15072081-russian-1934-shashka-dragoon-sabre-+-bayonet

I notice your scabard appears to be sitting a little off the table; does it have the rings for a Mosin-Nagant bayonet on the back? One thing I do know is I have never seen a reproduction with provision to piggyback a bayonet.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

Thanks for your opinions.

Yeah@Noa it does rings for holding a bayonet which is missing by the looks of it.

The link of that auction looks exactly the same just this one I am thinking of getting is in a lot better condition. The blade is very shiny which made me think something isn't right - of course it could of just been looked after for all these years.

Here are 3 other photos if you would like to see.

Thanks,

I collect swords myself and I'd be a little wary of that one.  As you've said; the blade steel feels wrong to me.  Too shiny and has a visible "grain" that I wouldn't expect and some rough grind marks as well.

I agree with Gareth. I also collect swords...although I do not have a Shashka as of yet.
A little Leatherman information.
