Asking the SAK mod experts
on: December 17, 2008, 05:52:30 AM
Is this doable?

How about this?

Would either need additional tools/blades to make it work? Could an OHT version be done?

I would say no, because the dedicated bottle opener won't fit in the same layer as the large blade.  The first one could be done if you switched the bottle opener for the combo tool.  In fact, that would give you a Scientist model.

Ah, goes to show how little I know of SAKs.

Does the combo work well at opening bottles? I hate a fiddly bottle opener and just assumed that the dedicated one would be best.

Scientist... yes.. that is just perfect.

Do you happen to know if the "long small phillips" requires a layer all it's own, or does it generally pair with a certain other tool? A scientist with the long small phillips would be my dream come true (and my first SAK since I was a boy).

That long Phillips is usually paired with scissors on a 111mm Vic.
Getting it onto a 91 might be quite a challenge.

I have not tried to get the skinny phillips on a 91mm cellidor knife but judging from the backspring it uses on the 111 models, I would say it isn't probable without a good deal of custom work.    Almost anything can be made to work, but it would take a lot of time and alteration and may not work as well as a factory Vic.

The combo tool does fine for a bottle opener.    Sounds like you need a scientist.

Thanks gents!

How boring of me though.. I mock up my dream SAK and it turns out to be an existing but discontinued model.

 :(

Should I be watching eBay? If it is rare, I'd just as soon see originals go to collectors and procure a mod version.

Scibeer, I would guess this is an easy one for someone of your talent. Could I request a price from you for one with black or green scales?

Or should anyone have a Scientist they are looking to sell..

Again, thank you for all the help, guys. My apologies for publicizing what must be a rather mundane search to a true SAK fan.

Since we went there, I'll chime in with another dream configuration and a possibility question. So, layer-by-layer:

  • Large blade -- small blade or combo tool / corkscrew + mini driver
  • magnifier -- led light / -
  • bit driver -- bit holder / -
  • ruler+scaler / awl + sewing hole or hook + nail file
  • plus "package" (pen, straight pin, toothpick, tweezers)
  • key ring

I could get the first layer, the hook, and the plus "pack" from a compact, the rest from a cybertool lite or a 29 and some lite one, and I'd have to find a ruler from somewhere. If the cost goes too high, I'd first remove the bit layer. Thoughts?

That should work.    To bad you're not closer, I have a bunch of extra scalers.

Whilst it is quite rare I've seen good condition used ones go for £25 on eBay.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Just to chime in late here Glorn, but I think the combo tool is a better bottle opener than the dedicated one.  The 'hook' gets a better grip on the under side of the cap IMO.

Does anyone have an answer if a magnifier / LED light layer is possible?  This is something I recently decided I want on a custom SAK as well.

It should be. AFAIK the CyberTool Lite has such a layer...

I just saw the cybertool lite with that layer too, thanks for the heads up.  Now, more importantly, can the magnifing glass be straigt up swapped for the in-line phillips driver without having to change the springs or anything (to make a custom SAK).
