Recommend me a Scandi ground knife please.
on: December 17, 2008, 09:50:11 AM
Ok so I've decided to give the Scandi grind a second serious crack of the whip :), so I'm looking for recomendations for a quality knife :)

Ideally I'd like it to have these qualities...

A blade of no more than 4 and a half inches, and not less than 3 :)
Full Tang (a big ask I know, as there mostly rat tailed tangs ::))
Quality steel, but not a super one ie 12c 27 would be great :)
And preferably made out of traditional materials :)
And of at least 3mm - 5.5mm stock so I can use it for light Batoning :)

Please no recommendations for the Mora, as there a great knife and I've had several, but there not what I'm looking for :D

Thanks in advance guy's :)

I have several Mora's, but I always forget the 2000. They are they second best knife deal in the world. The first of course is the SAK farmer model.  :D

I think you are out of luck unless you go custom or kit-built. Eklund blades come in AEB-L stainless but that's about all I can think of.

I have a Marttini that I love and is my main camping knife but it (like almost any scandi) is a rat tail tang.  See here;http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58204

To be honest I do have a hand made scandi ground blade that has a full tang and it feels a bit more solid but a lot more weighty.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

What's sweet about Ragweed and Ragnar (same dealer) is the shipping cost
is the same whether you get 1 or 10 from him! conus (last I heard it was 6 usd)
and he's got excellent customer service.

email him if your somewhere else in the world, I'm sure it's reasonable.

I remember emailing him about international shipping. The rate is okay, not the best but not bad.

Like I said yesterday the problem with buying overseas atm is that the exchange rate is so unfavorable that's it's just not worth the hassel of buying abroad unless it's a really expensive item :-\

Have you seen this shop before?

http://www.moonrakerknives.co.uk/index.html

Prices are OK (  :-\ ) as they include P&P.  They seem to stock all the major scandi makers.  Let us know what you decide on.  I just can't bring to mind a proper scandi that is full tang though.  :(

PS this isn't a recommendation as I have had no personal dealings with the seller.

How about Marttiini Ranger, they come in two different sizes and with two handle colour-combinations,it has heavy dard reddish brown sheath, made very well, and plastic liner to prevent any damage done by blade to sheath itself.it aint the most traditional Leuku there is but who cares, its still a good user.

Thanks for the link mate :tu:

I really like the look of the Helle Fire, if it was a tad longer I'd buy it like a shot ::)

I'm having second thoughts about getting a Scandi now anyway, as the trouble is there not stand alone blades :-\, there made to be used in conjunction with an Axe, which is not what I like from a knife as I prefere something that can do all tasks if possible including batoning, and I'm not at all confident using such thin bladed, rat tailed tang knives for such arduous work :-\

Might have to think this one over

But thanks fella's :tu:

I've batoned with the marttini and it's still in one piece so it can be done.  I do understand your concerns though.  What about a nice big MOD blade?  It could be ground into a high scandi rather than a secondary bevel. ;)

I don't think you would need fear batoning with that monster. :D
