We all have models we love -for me it's the Pioneer and the Classic, Swiss Champ is up there, the Waiter, the alox Bantam, Farmer of course - but others that, well, we should love, but they just don't turn our crankshafts.

This is going to be a very confessional thread, and if you all come clean, some knives' feelings are going to be hurt. This isn't about hate for a particular model, just a model that, sorry, so sorry - you're great, but...please, don't be upset, it's nothing you did, we just didn't connect.

What knife has a lot going for it, but just leaves you cold?

I'll start off. Phew...this is tough. Pioneer X, you're really cool and I'm glad you're here to complete my Pioneer family, but...I just don't see you getting any pocket time and...hang on, somebody's calling me on the other line. *click* Climber? I'll jump into it 😉. I like the Pioneer series, but just can't warm up to it.  I'm a fan of Old Cross and military Alox...that gets my heart racing! :woohoo:

I tried so hard to love the One-Hand Trekker. It had everything I love in an outdoor SAK. But nope.......... Just couldn’t connect with it. Maybe is was the length of the spear blade. Possibly the left-handed liner lock. Perhaps the Phillips screwdriver on the backside. I don’t know.

I'm with Barry on this one. I have 4 Alox models, and honestly the lack of scale tools and backside tools just doesn't work for me.

I will also add the Spirit. I know its heresy but I prefer one hand opening on a pliers based MT and while the build quality is great, its 2019 and Victorinox hasn't updated either the Swisstool or Spirit in YEARS and I feel like they're getting farther behind the competition

The Evolution series with ergonomic scales.  I know the ergonomic scales are suppose to make them more comfortable to use but they just feel all wrong in my hand and add thickness.

I briefly had an Alox Soldier for a brief time and I didn't care for it. Too nice to use really.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

For me, it is not so much about a particular model, but the tool.  I used to love the saw on all SAK models(I still do, but more for outdoor), but since I discovered how good is the metal saw(especially in an urban environment), I have since then carried my Mountaineer exclusively, instead of climber/huntsman/farmer.

I have made a video about using the liner with the right hand, I actually quite like the 111mm OH trekker.  It has a liner lock, but a backspring as a backup should the lock fail you.  Amazing wood saw, overbuilt "pry-tool" flathead and the one hand does work quite well.

The 130mm series, in particular the Rangerwood 55. I was really stoked when I bought one, but it was just too big to be comfortable carrying it and using it. So it became a dust collector until it became part of a trade for the 108mm Fireman… which is also a dust collector by the way  :D

The difference however is I never bought the 108mm series to use them a lot, but I did buy that Rangerwood 55 with the intention to use it and it just didn't do it for me.

Big SAK fan here, but I never warmed up to any of the 84mm or 91mm cellidor models. They just feel too flimsy for me.

I know, that’s like 90% of all swiss army knives in existence... :facepalm:

Give me a 93mm alox and 58mm combo any day of the week.

The Money clip, it has the right tools but when you use it you have to remove your cash then the world see's you take out your cash just to use the scissors. It's just not practical.

Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?

The Farmer. I so so so want to love this knife. Tough as anything; great, beefy toolset. But even the truly fantastic awl can’t make the saw long enough for my work purposes. :(

Also the Climber. A popular model I just can’t connect with. To me it’s merely a Spartan with scissors and a hook. My keyring Rambler covers the scissors and more and since I very rarely use the hook, I’d rather carry a Spartan and save some bulk. Or preferably a Sportsman - my favourite two layer knife with back tools. (The Wenger Basic 66 isn’t far behind.)

Honestly, if I need a 91mm with scissors and hook for daily carry it may as well include an inline Phillips, magnifier, wood saw, metal saw/file, pliers, scaler/ruler, chisel, mini SD, pen, and technician’s flat SD. Oh wait...  :D

One of the first SAKs I bought was an Evo S54 many years ago. Seemed cool at the time. Now I look at it and keep thinking what a waste of space the plastic ruler/compass orienteering thingy is, and how much better it would be without it...I just can’t bring myself to modding it, so it’s the unloved model that never gets rotated.

It doesn't work well as both a money clip and a primary knife/tool at the same time.  I've found good options with the Money Clip to be either:
  • To carry the Money Clip as a primary knife, don't use it as a Money Clip.  Just drop it in your pocket, or use the handy clip to attach it to the edge of a pocket.
  • Alternatively, carry another primary knife, and use the Money Clip primarily as a money clip and only as a backup knife.

I absolutely love the way they look, but a SAK without tweezers might as well be jewelry, as far as I’m concerned. For this reason, I’ve never EDCd one.

Sure do make pretty gifts for the uninitiated, though.

I've been carrying a pair of sliver grippers on my key chain for many years.  When I started carrying them, they rapidly became my go-to tweezers over the SAK tweezers, because they are stouter/allow more force to be applied, and the tip is finer.  And, of course, carrying separate tweezers opens up the possibility of carrying SAKs without tweezers...

I want to love the pioneer X, but it is just too heavy for my pocket.
I always seem to go back to my alox bantam + nailcare swisscard combo. It is just so perfect for my needs  :dunno:

It's not the weight for me - I love the Farmer, but somehow that particular combination of tools on the X...IDK. But mainly I chimed in to OH MY GOD THE ALOX BANTAM HIGH FIVE BRO 😎👉👉 I love that little knife. I think it's because I carried a Douk-douk (or one of its variations) for YEARS, and I feel like the alox Bantam is that knife, just better. Now that I say that... I'd love to see an alox Bantam with a 4-inch blade.
