Leatherman Crunch - Does yours sit fully closed?

Hey guys and gals

Just received a Leatherman Crunch and noticed that when it’s closed, the two sides don’t sit completely together. There’s a slight gap and the two side of the tool sit ever so slightly out of alignment with eachother. It’s by a really small amount, and you can squeeze them together (they click when pushed together) and they sit flush and aligned with eachother. But when I let go, they move ever so slightly apart.

It’s by a very small amount, but just wanted to know from you all whether that’s normal or not?

Thanks  :multi:

Mine sit completely flush when closed. Mine are an old pat pend model.

How about a pic

I own two of them, one being an early "pat pend" version and the other has a date code of 2013 in the handles.

The oldest one is perfect in every way, while on the other, the handles are a bit out of alignement when you close the tool.  But at the very end of closing it, there's a small piece sticking out of one handle which goes into a hole on the other handle with a small click, and once this happens, both handles are perfectly aligned and tight together.

My guess is that yours might just be a bit more missaligned, maybe just enough to let the handles "escape" the grip of the two parts that click together (hope this makes sense  :-[).

Like Steve said, pics would help  ;).

Thanks for the reply Steve. I’ve attached some pics here..

The last two shots show how much the alignment is out by. The last two pics show me holding it closed when the two sides align, and another when I release the pressure and they move apart slightly and fall out of alignment.

The website is giving me a really hard time uploading any more images. Keeps telling me they’re too large - above 512k.

I don’t know how to make them smaller. But hopefully that photo shows it

Thanks for the reply! How you described the second Crunch is exactly what mine is doing. When is squeeze the two sides together, that small piece of metal (lug at the base of the Philips driver) slots into the hole on the other side and they click into place and sit flush and perfectly aligned. When I release the pressure, the two sides sit slightly apart again.

With yours, when you’ve squeezed them together, so they stay like that after you release the pressure?

Thanks!!

I know the side to side misalignment is normal due to the way they design them to prevent the handles from flopping around. The non fully close issue, I have to have a look at mine.

I wouldn't be worried about it if the little knob of the Phillips locks into the gap in the other handle.
I have to ever so slightly push the handle sideways to do this.

Thanks Matt for taking the time to check!

When you release the pressure after pushing the handle, does it stay fully closed, or does it come back part again?

Cheers :salute:

It is unfortunate that you recieved a Crunch with misaligned handles. While I don't feel that misaligned handles are a big deal on most tools, the Crunch is an exception. The tolerances are incredibly tight, where everything needs to be positioned properly to work reliably.
I hope it isn't hindering the function, and if it is, I hope LM will take care of it for you. :tu:

It is a very old design that needs some tweaking, but very cool nonetheless. Congrats on getting a Crunch!

Thanks! I do really like the tool. Only just bought it, but I think it might be easier sending back to LM, as got it online and not from Amazon.

I don’t think it’s hindering the function, but I guess
I’d really like it to be in perfect order.. is that ocd?

Thanks
