Magnetic Pocket Clip
on: June 25, 2019, 06:22:34 PM
I really started to like my LM‘s with pocket clips lately, especially the Wingman. Now I have a Rebar incoming, and would like to carry it with a pocket clip as well. I would like to avoid to attach it permanently though, and so i thought about getting a pocket clip with a magnet. That way I could also use it with the PST/PST2

I could not really find anything like it, so i thought about getting a rare earth magnet and use epoxy to attach a pocket clip to it. That should be a strong enough bond, so i won‘t loose the tool or the clip.

Has anyone made something similar and can share some experience or ideas? I would appreciate it!  :hatsoff:

Just a couple of thoughts regarding possible issues.

1. Even really strong magnets won't keep a pocket clip reliably attached, because of the, because of the angular force applied to the magnets while clipped in a pocket.

2. Really strong magnets are going to pick up all sorts of metal particulates, even stuff you won't have any idea where the stuff came from.

That said, perhaps I am very wrong and someone else has a better perspective. Hopefully that is the case. I am definitely not a magnet expert..  :)

:iagree: Also, really strong magnets can make you feel nauseous after a short while.

Interesting, thanks for posting! That is a pretty neat idea. I might have to get some magnets and play around with it  :tu:

I thinks it’s a neat idea, but along with what has been said I personally would be a bit nervous having a magnet in close proximity to a computer or a watch.
I thought for some reason the Nite Ize Hip Clips are removable. Maybe another option.

I found some Multi-pole neodymium magnets. As far as i understand they have a shallow magnetic field, making it less likely to interfere with anything that is not in close proximity. The weakest one i could find has a pull force of 6kg, which should be plenty to hold a tool.
The backside has a 3M Very High Bond adhesive on it. So i might not even need epoxy. I will order a few and give it a shot.
