Is it crazy to mod a brand new Ranger 70?
on: June 26, 2019, 12:31:13 AM
I have a brand new Ranger 70, with the full-length file. I'm thinking about snagging a Ranger Wood and combining them. Perhaps even with the screwdriver and pliers from a 120mm ranger.   I think I paid $100 for the Ranger 70, $100 for my Swiss Buck with the pliers and driver, and a ranger wood is around $70. I'll probably need one more 130mm donor to make the proper length backspring to use the pliers and driver. That's a lot of dime to make a personalized knife. Not sure it's worth it.

Still not sure why Victorinox doesn't make more variations to the 130mm platform. Basically, my ideal 130mm knife has a long large inline phillips driver that fits under a nice pair of scissors, ala the 111mm (but not a #00 driver, make it a normal driver). Then an OHO plain-edged blade, a saw, a full-sized file, and both openers. Preferably with wooden scales. Getting anywhere near that is quite an expensive endeavor. I can do it, it's only money... but at that point maybe it's better to carry a multiool and a Ranger Wood.... but damn that does drag down the pants.

Charles.

Is it crazy, no not at all. If you can afford it and it will make you happy... do it.   :tu:   :like:

You would have to be crazy to want to mod it.
But if you didn't mod it, you would be crazy to miss the opportunity.
Since either way is crazy, do it if you want!
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Personally, given their scarcity, yes. I'd look out for something someone absolutely trashed to use as mod fodder.

That's what I'm kinda thinking. I haven't used it at all, it's so pristine and nice that it doesn't feel like I want to use it at all. It helps that it only has a blade and saw and pliers with no openers... I don't like the 130mm pliers and I need openers...   I mean, it doesn't work for me, so I kinda want to mod it. But it's rare and expensive, so I kinda want to either hold on to it or sell it.

Charles.
