New Mod - Yeoman with Wood Saw
on: July 01, 2019, 11:28:59 PM
All this modding stuff starts so innocently, doesn’t it?  All I wanted was to find the one ideal SAK.  My research led me to believe that a SAK Yeoman would be it.  Three layers that would replace my four layer Explorer.   But, a Yeoman costs too much, so I decided to make the jump to modding and make my own.  It turned out great, and it was fun to do.   :)

I used a Compact, which is 2 layers, for the base.  After I used it to make the Yeoman, I missed it and got another Compact!

So now, my favorite 2 layer SAK is a Compact, and my favorite 3 layer SAK is a “Yeoman” mod.  I posted that last week.

Now that my Explorer has been replaced by my “Yeoman”, I started thinking, what would be my ideal 4 layer SAK?  Previously, my second favorite 4-layer SAK behind the Explorer, was the Huntsman.  So now I’m thinking, what if I added a wood saw to a Yeoman.  Then, I would have a single 4 layer SAK that would replace both the Explorer and the Huntsman!

I couldn’t help myself.  Somebody stop me!  Here I present my new “Yeoman with Wood Saw”.  I saw that a few of you here at MTo also like this arrangement.  I remember someone suggested the name “Yeoman WS” for such a mod.  That sounds good to me.  Maybe it is good enough it deserves its own name, instead of being a derivative.  Anyone have suggestions for a unique name for this particular mod?

Again, so much inspiration here at MTo.  Thanks!

Here is a photo of my new favorite camping knife.

Thanks, everyone for the kind words!

I used a Compact as the base, so it has the nail file on the back of the hook.  The Compact also comes with Plus Scales, which I like.  I bought a used Explorer on EBay to get the gray magnifier with Philips layer.  I bought a used Ranger to get the Wood Saw layer with the Fine Screwdriver as the back tool.

The leftover parts were not wasted either.  I made a Climber out of the leftover parts from the Ranger, and made a Spartan out of the leftover parts of the Explorer.   I still have a metal saw layer with chisel for some future project.

Here are some side by side photos of the Compact, Yeoman and Yeoman WS for comparison.  I also made some photos of the assembly order of each knife to put in the MTo forum about exploded views of various SAKs.

I love it.  I have been thinking about that as a mod I would love to have as a camping knife.

Right now, I have an discontinued Woodsman to fill that role, but having that capability in a 4-layer would be even better.  The Yeoman is my favorite SAK, but I have thought that adding a wood saw would make it an awesome camping knife.

The Yeoman WS is a fantastic idea!  One alternative could possibly also be the Yeoman MS, with the metal file instead of wood saw for a more "urban" version.  The Yeoman is amazing as it is, adding an additional rough cutting tool like a woodsaw or metal file is genius.

Jaya-man and JasonJ,  we think alike.  Both of those possible mods may be my next.  However, once I get above 4 layers, I often think I might as well go right to a Swiss Champ, as I probably won't carry a 5 layer knife in my pocket. (I also have an old "Champion-C" from the late 80's, that has the wood saw, metal saw/file, and the very thin fish scaler, so it has the capability of the Yeoman with wood saw and metal saw with only a couple of extra layers.  This I carry in a pouch/sheath.)

Agreed.. I find 4 layers is my max, and that's pushing it, 3 is much more comfortable.  My Deluxe Tinker is sometimes a burden outside of a belt sheath.  Super Tinker feels great, but my Huntsman is somewhere in the middle of those two.
