Charge goes BOOM, Rebar catches shrapnel!
on: July 15, 2019, 11:16:26 PM
This is actually a modding thread. A double modding thread.

But it awl starts with a Charge AL.

I've always wanted a 154CM blade in a Wave. I love 154CM, but that's not a standard option for the Wave. And I just like the Wave a bit more than the Charge AL: it's a bit slimmer and weighs about the same. Advantage Wave.

So I sat down today with a pair of Loki's wrenches (Thanks, Loki.  :waving:) and exploded my Charge AL.

At this point the situation could have been normalized, but I plunged in with a blade swap. This required a couple of security-torx bits and some dexterity:

I thought about replacing all the outer tools with the stainless bits from the Charge for a semi-tuxedo version, but it occurs to me that I can now easily see which blade is my PE (stainless side) and which is the SE blade (black oxide side). So I left the other tools alone. It is a bit ugly this way, like a weird mutt, but I kinda like it.  :D

So, with bits and pieces everywhere, I look around the room and see an innocent Rebar, knocked down by the blast.

What would make the Rebar......better?

I think you guys know where I'm going with this......

When I was done putting the Rebar back together, there were a few parts left over.....

But, awl in awl, I was happy with the results:

I gotta say, the Charge's scissors seem like they were made for the Rebar. Which brings up the question....... Why isn't this a standard option....???

Well, let me present a 'two for the price of three special', a 154 Wave and another Rebar X:

Nice job Jack and I agree that it's stupid that the Rebar doesn't come with scissors as standard.

Thanks, Fuzzy. The Wave seems like a solid tool, and one of Leatherman's better ones.

Looks good, I do love a black wave.

I would like to pick your brains if I could. I will be straight swapping the worn file in my wave for a newer replacement as soon as it arrives.

I have ordered a couple of security torx bits from amazon and was wondering when refitting the screws after swapping in the file do you just tighten the screws hand tight. Or would that lock up the blades. So you tighten them up only as much as required to provide enough friction to stop the blades flopping about.

Thanks in advance
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

chip, I’d say tighten it down and adjust tension accordingly to your liking... Just like assembling modern folders...

 :iagree:

I tightened the bolts until they 1) felt secure and 2) the action felt good. On one of them, I clearly over-tightened the bolts and everything was too tight. I just backed the bolts out about 1/8 a turn and everything felt good.

When you take your Wave apart, be aware (and try to keep track) of the various bits and washers, etc....  The toughest part of this is getting all those parts back together...in the correct order.  :D  Fiddly.   ;)

With your title, I thought it was some twit doing something irresponsible with explosives.  But great mod! Every time I stare at my Rebar and Wave together, I think about putting the Wave scissors in the Rebar.   With the Wave; I feel Leatherman has produced the perfect model in the one they made for the Dutch police. Awl in place of can opener (a new tool entirely) and the Charge cutting hook serrated blade.

I do like the hook cutter blade. That would be a nice addition, here.  :tu:

 Cheers, Speedy.

It was a fun project, worth doing on its own. The Rebar has been a favorite of mine for a while now. I resisted adding some scissors initially, but, let's face it, they are just too useful not to be included in this little gem of multitool. Since I tend to like to have a multitool with me while fishing, I like having those scissors included.

It's true that I will likely have a SAK with scissors along with me, so in some ways adding scissors to a multitool is a bit of a luxury. A nit redundant. However, it was a fairly straightforward modification. So why not?  ;)
