kamakiri Day 9:

Decisions, decisions...ended up picking the Alpineer/Passenger:

Don't normally like choosing SAKs without scissors...but hey, gotta live life dangerously, right?

The other two knives are shown because they won't likely make a later appearance in the Challenge.  Hoffritz Craftsman S11231  (no, not *that* one, the 'Explorer' type) on top was nixed since it's only technically discontinued. Well, *all* Hoffritzes would qualify with all their different names...but I thought it best to not muddy the water with this one. The knife on the bottom is a regular c. '79 Passenger...which is just not as fun as the Alpineer version.

MTO Discontinued Challenge November 2019
1. Super Timer (red roman numeral)
2. c. '60 Master Craftsman 136mU
3. Marlboro Troubleshooter c. '95
4. Marlboro Outdoorsman
5. Marlboro The Trail Guide
6. Wednesday Hoff 'Favorite' 6-layer Craftsman '76
7. Grand Prix '77
8. Grand Prix Jr. '76
9. Passenger (Alpineer)

Day 9

Mauser 108mm  Some people would say to avoid any gun branded knife at all cost, I think that is generally true.  But the Mauser 108mm would be probably be my exception to that.  I always think the 108mm is a cool length to own and use, the only con I have is the saw on the 108mm was too aggressive and it's really hard to use on semi-soft wood.

Day 8, finally back on time.

Made some extra kindling to boost fire starting at the sauna, works well even though I'm out of practice.

(Image removed from quote.)

I don't know precisely what it is, it's my nephews artistic interpretation.

Well in Finland snow is a fact of life, and will continue to be.

Love sauna!

It's pretty cool piece, sometimes it doesn't have to be anything anyway.

Day 8

After seeing the Grand Prix mentioned yesterday, I had to bring out mine for today. Mid-70's piece, with metal-head tweezers, non-stamped back tang, square Phillips with can key slot. Unfortunately it came with mismatched advertisment scales, so I put on Silvertech ones. I'm hoping to find a matching set of automobile scales one day.

I would think finding a pair of automobile scales might be difficult(unless someone is modding one, and pealing it off).  But with that said,  best of luck with that!

a Victorinox officer’s knife dating from 1957-61(if I’ve red the WIKI correctly- please do correct me if I’ve got it wrong) branded for Swissair.

That would be for the main line production dates. There are examples of advertising knives with the conical awl into '63.

I have one of the Swiss Air models with the hidden awl that is from the mid '60s. Only one with early '60s details would 'prove' yours is '61 or earlier.

Cheers Kamakiri - as I say, more than happy to be corrected! I just love the quarter round awl on the front scale! I should have said Day 9, not Day 8, so here’s a bonus:

Day 9

New acquisition 234k Swissair opening a bottle for dinner

Day 9, kind of a poor shot of current core EDC with bad lighting , hoped for an action shot and let the sun go down.

Great knives as always, itching for a 108mm, could round out the collection.

Day 9

The Golfer returned today, opened a couple of bottles of beer I shared with a colleague who came over for the evening.

A question: is a late 50's "Camper" considered discontinued or simply just vintage, meaning should/could it make an appearance in this challenge or not?

I would not consider it discontinued if the the toolset has not changed.

I've switched back to the Champion. I really missed the scissors and the saw and other bits. Only use today though was the toothpick.

Thanks, Max.

Day 10
Only a few hours into the day and the Yeoman has already been seeing some use.  First, I used the scissors to cut the shipping label for a box I need to mail.  Then it was snack time, used the knife to open a bag of trail mix and the combo tool to open the beer to go with it.

234k Swissair opening some cider first thing, not for a tipple, but to put into a pork and cabbage casserole for this evening! I must get some more polishing pads for the Dremel and finish off sprucing up 234k later on today....
