Real nice score.  Always nice when you get something new, but especially if your not spending money out of pocket.

Day 23 photos

The Mariner is a slide-lock 111mm knife with a shackle opener and a marlin spike tip. The shackle opener is the slotted end making it somewhat adjustable on different size shackles.

I’ve never fully understood how these spikes and shackle openers are intended to be used...never spent any time around boats.  :dunno:

I have a Helmsman that I thought was really neat. The marlin spike/shackle opener can be versatile.  Nice carry.

Ray - You have a nice assortment of SAKs and fun using them.

So, you may be the best person to ask a simple question.
The background - one of my adoptive grand daughters at the Y where I work is 22, graduated from college with a major in Spanish and will be leaving mid-September to teach English in Madrid, Spain and travel Europe on her down time.
I have decided to gift her a SAK, but not aware of all models. Yet, I could see her requiring a scissors, knife, can opener, bottle opener, and of course a Cork screw.

The Climber came to mind. Or, is there another model that would be better. 3 layers would be best, maybe a 4 if better tool options.

When it comes to gifting for another person, I have learned one simple rule and have followed it since my 20’s. Take the person with you and let them decide what model they want. You can give some input as to help her but let her get what she feels is the best for her. Let her handle the knives and let her open them. In the end she will be getting what she likes and along with the keepsake a memory of a day spent with you. Her choice may even surprise you. And with you not knowing all the models available you might find something yourself! A double win! Hope this helps.

Day 24 photos

The Skipper. Another marine based knife that has the added tool of pliers. This model has the Navy Camouflage. It is one of my favorite camo SAK’s. It is also a liner-lock knife.

Nice choice.  The Skipper is right up there with the Outrider for 111mm on my wish list.
