A little more history....

Buck knives really got started in San Diego.

Hoyt was born in Kansas and that’s where he first made knives.  During the war years he was living in Idaho. But Hoyt and his wife, Daisy, moved to San Diego  to join their son , Al Buck, after he was discharged from the Navy.

After Hoyt died from cancer, Al took up the business and moved Buck Knives to a quonset hut in San Diego.

The company really took off after the development of the 110 folder.  The 110 was and is Buck’s #1 seller. (As of 1990 Buck had sold over 11 million 110’s.)

After several moves, in 2003 Buck moved back to Idaho. While the new plant contains some state of the art CNC and laser cutting machines, a few of the pieces date back to WW II. The guide mentioned that the model and date stamp on the ricasso of most Bucks is made with a machine from WW II.

The shop was really noisy. We wore a transmitter in one ear and an ear plug in the other.

So it was tough to ask questions. The guide had a nicely prepared talk and passed around samples of knives and handles in various stages of production.

However, I did try to ask some of your questions.

The “museum” room was essentially a couple of cases of interesting Buck knives, including some handmade knives by Hoyt.

The lighting was pretty bad for photography, so apologies in advance.

In regard to tactical knives, Buck had a display of military and LEO collaborations. The guide noted that Buck did not have a contract with the military, but did collaborate with some military and LEO.

In the factory store......yes, there was a store......they were selling the Marksman and a couple other tactical models, including a beast of a folding tanto designed by Tops. I think the Sprint and Rapidfire auto are also nods toward the tactical knife.

As far as the guide was aware, the Marksman was going to be continued. :tu:

With regard to the SwissBuck knives, I got an interesting answer to my questions.

There had been significant demand and enthusiasm for the SwissBuck project. However, Buck was not satisfied with the reliability and durability of some of the components (scissors were mentioned).  Since Buck offers a “Forever warranty”, they want products that will stand the test of time. Since that couldn’t be assured, that line was dropped.

I encouraged a reconsideration.

Buck has a close relationship with the Boy Scouts. It doesn’t sound like there are plans for a multifunction “Scout” knife as we know them. However, Buck does have a BSA line (110, Spitfire, Vantage).

Thanks, guys.

Getting back on the bike.  Looks like My route will be crossing some nasty thunderstorms, so today’s journey promises to be wet and cold.

That’s motorcycling.

I’ll resume my notes on the Buck factory visit later.

Most excellent read Jack, very interesting. It is a bit weird picturing a pastor forging knifes in a church's basement  :D

That old pricelist is cool.
I'd take one too for 16$, and one axe  :tu:

Drive carefully, I hope you're not getting too wet  :hatsoff:

$16 in 1960 is equivalent to $140 today.

I'd take the $40 or so that they cost now any day of the week instead.   :P

EDIT: Thanks for awl the kind comments!   :tu:

Back home now.  Still a little wet and drying out.  :)

I was hoping for some great scenery on the ride back, but I mostly saw raindrops on the helmet visor.

Getting ready to head head out this morning:

Early in the day I stopped and snapped a couple of pics along the way. The route would along the east side of Lake Pend Oreille and the Clark Fork river. These don't really capture the size of the lake (it's big!), but does give you a sense of the terrain and state of things.....as well as the rain that would start in a few minutes......

You can see there is still some smoke haze in the air. When I was packin the bike, I noticed some ash had fallen on the bike's seat and panniers.  :o

I don't see how you guys can be bored with photos of the motorcycle yet, so I've added an extra one:

Anyway, northern Idaho is really lovely with lakes, rivers, and hills. I can see why Buck relocated there!
