The Smiths tri stone will sharpen your 112, I've used one for 30 years.

I suspect you haven't sharpened to the apex yet. You're still sharpening up by the blue line and haven't touched the apex yet.
All that jagged area by the red line in the first pic is damage. Until that is gone the knife will not be sharp.

I suggest for now to use a more obtuse angle of 20 degrees. A cheap Sliding T-Bevel Gauge set for 20 degrees and sitting beside your tri stone will give you a good angle guide.

A cheap x5 power magnifying glass will allow you to see the edge and watch your progress.

It takes practice and time to clean up damage be patient and practice on cheap kitchen knives.

Well, thanks to all who assisted me with my quest to make my 112 a REAL knife again! Using the Lansky sharpening system and a 25 degree angle, I have got this thing really sharp! It may need a wee bit of tweaking, but it is looking good! The Lansky has also ressurrected a used Spyderco Manix back to life also! I am actually getting pretty good at this! lol    :hatsoff:

Way to go! It is great you did not give up on such a hardy knife.

A 112 blade has a lot of life and regardless of abuse suffered should always be resurrected.

Well done :hatsoff:

Bit late.  Glad to hear you got your 112 and Manix sharp.  The Lansky is really good affordable tool to do that.  Theres a lot of options too for steels that may need diamonds and theres ceramic and leather strops to take the edge further.

Very nice, I carry a Red Slim Select most days. A perfect carry for me as I have become accustomed to lock back knifes.

The 112 Slim Select Pro + is also a great carry, you can tell and feel the premium steel each time you cut.

I have seen the slim select pro models, the 112 and 110. There is a country store in Durham a few miles from where I work that has TONS of knives. He says is one of the largest Buck dealers in NC, but I fear hardly anybody knows about this place. I first went in there about 7 years ago after hearing about it from a co-worker of mine who knew I collected knives. I was expecting maybe a display full of the cheapo tacticool crap you see in some convenience stores, but HOLY CRAP!  :climber: This guy has about 6 or 7 large glass displays of knives. Three of them with just Bucks. He also has Schrade, Case, Remington, and several others I cannot remember off the top of my head. Two of my 112's come from there and will be buying more. He also has Buck knife oil, loose Buck leather sheaths and other things. Some of the stuff he has, has been in that store for years and am sure is very collectible. His main problem is he is kind of just outside being in the middle of nowhere, and is only open three days a week.

That does sound interesting.  Does he have an internet presence?

I was thinking that it would be one of the knives I was going to buy, plus the store knife.  :dunno:

That is a gem of a store!

I thought they may sell via the online store, but no, just a listing.

Open 4, closed 3.  Interesting business model.  Was wondering if they maybe NASCAR people who work the race tracks on Sunday, leave in the wee hours via chartered plane to the race city, work speciality jobs for crews; spotters, feelers, tire haulers..., then return home after the race via the same plane.

A friend in Rocky Mount did that for several years.

My latest find is this vintage Buck 112 Ranger two-dot version, made between 1974 and 1980.
Still in very good condition regarding it's age, and armhair shaving sharp with a toothy edge.

This older Buck 112 is definitely not a lightweight, has no finger grooves, no rounding of the handle edges, cannot be easily opened due to a strong spring and no nailnick, and the blade is not made from 420HC but from noticeably harder & more wear resistant 440C steel.
The blade is also semi-hollow ground instead of hollow ground like newer versions.

In short: old school quality for real men,  :D

Specs:

Length open: 18,4 cm
Length closed: 10,9 cm
Blade length: 7,5 cm
Blade thickness: 3,0 mm
Blade grind: semi-hollow
Sharpening angle: ~30 degrees inclusive (or ~15 degrees per side)
Steel type: 440C stainless
Hardness: ~60 HRC
Lock type: Lockback
Handle material: Solid brass frame with Makassar Ebony inlays
Weight: 183,4 grams
Belt sheath: Leather
