One handed trekker discontinued?
on: August 15, 2019, 03:34:24 AM
Hello,
My name is Mike and I have been an SAK user/collector for several decades. I am posting because I believe the One handed trekker is being discontinued. Has anyone else heard this?

I received an email from a website that sells survival equipment, and in the email they indicated the OHT was being discontinued. I emailed them to confirm. They said it is, and that dealers are only selling old stock. I was shocked, and checked the Victorinox web page. It appears to be true:-(!! All they have listed is the black serrated model and the German Army knife.

Maybe they will be creating a model for EDC that is similar, but with a pocket clip like the Alox Hunter? I always suggested that the perfect EDC would be the one handed trekker, 15 or 20% smaller, and with the saw replaced with something like scissors and a in line screwdriver, and the hunter pocket clip That would be a home run grand slam. Whatever it is, I bet we are going to start seeing some different in the locking series.

What do you think?

Thanks!
Mike

Hmm. It would appear the non-serrated OH Trekker, has, in fact, been discontinued.  Haven't seen anyone selling them since I bought my Soldier in 2015.  But the black OHO Trekker is still very common, it's among the models you'll find at various sporting goods stores and the like in clam pack.

I agree, but it is weird that the camouflage version in any form is also gone and the black one was hard to get a few months ago. Also the dealer said they were all being discontinued. Maybe tomorrow I will call victorinox and confirm. I wonder if anyone on here is a dealer and can confirm. I think victorinox has something up their sleeve; especially since they finally put a real pocket clip on a knife this year.

I hope not.  I've always thought of them as the 21st Century SAK.

Noooo!

Really?

The non-serrrated OH trekker is probably my favorite 111mm hiking/camping knife.  Easy to maintain, OHO locking blade, good saw, openers, what's not there to like?  Can't believe they would be discontinuing this!

Makes sense that Vic would discontinue the OHO Trekker. It is a thin market; basically military and the US civilian. It is illegal in most all of Europe. Glad I got mine a few years ago. Just a thought.

I can't find the topic, but I remember this coming up earlier this year.  The speculation then was that this might be a european thing.  What part of the world are you in?

The US site lists the Skipper Pro, Locksmith, Forester M Grip, Sentinel Clip (there is a pocket clip in 111mm), Trailmaster Grip, Trekker, Alpiner Grip, RescueTool, Soldier 08, Sentinel One Hand and Hunter XT Grip all with the OH blade (plus a bunch of 130mm Ranger models.

Only picture of a clip on 111mm I could find:

Thanks guys, I am located in the USA.

I called Victorinox USA today. They confirmed the discontinuation of the non-serrated OHTs and told me that they still have serrated cammo and black ones in stock and another batch arriving next month, but seemed unsure on other details. It is possible the customer rep was not too familiar with it. I sent and email to Victorinox and am waiting a response.

My normal knife dealer, Knifecenter, lists it as discontinued.

I'm really surprised by this news since the OHT is such a popular model. It has over 850 reviews on Amazon. Perhaps Vic wants to rationalize the product lineup, filling its place with the Soldier?

I'm also very surprised this thread isn't on fire!

Personally, I prefer the regular "two hand" opening Trailmaster/Trekker. No hump on the back of the blade makes the other tools much more comfortable to use. I can open the blade easily enough with one hand. I also like the half stop as you close the blade.

Unless you want to take a chance with shipping from Italy, the THT is hard to find new now. According to the local distributor, it was discontinued last year. I couldn't find one locally (NZ) and had to get one from the US, basically the only place in the world I could find it online, and then only from very few retailers.

The OHT is still listed here, along with the Soldier. The Soldier seems to be preferred by retailers.

If you want T&T, the next best option soon will be the Forester, with no OHO if you want it and with the corkscrew instead of the Phillips that makes the knife so comfortable to hold.

It seems victorinox is doing some weird things with the 111mm line. I am also shocked this thread is not on fire. I believe in the USA we are still seeing websites listing then two handed trekker but I am not sure if that is just old stock. I’d love for them to reintroduce these models with a pocket clip but the women on the phone was adamant that they would not be adding clips.

I hope they don’t discontinue the adventuerer, one of my all time favorites

I believe there was a discussion here somewhere regarding the 111mm range... If my memory serves me right, a member got some info from one of the Vic dealers in Europe... in essence, there will be no new models with OH opening... and yes, this has something to do with most countries knife laws...

The OH Trekker/Trailmaster non-serrated I believe was only for the North American market... If it were indeed phased out, it might be to keep in line with world offerings...

The Trekker/Trailmaster line overall wont be phased out I hope... It’s a very popular model for the 111mm line and for the military orgs around the world...

Dumb question--is the Locksmith new to the US market? I've never seen it offered for sale officially in the US until now.

Hmmmmm, always seemed to be a good seller. I bought one years back, but didn't want the serrations so I re-profiled mine.

I was able to purchase a brand new one-hand trekker, with a non-serrated blade two days ago on Amazon (I'm in the USA), but it was only available with camouflage scales.

I didn't see the Trekker, OHO or otherwise, in the latest Victorinox catalogue.

Does anyone have any updates or more pieces of the puzzle as to what is happening with the 111mm product line?

I spoke with two separate Victorinox employees who said that they won't be making non-serrated one-handed versions of any models that don't already have them - Hunters and Skippers vs. Soldiers and Foresters.  I suppose serrations are one of those polarizing deal breakers in the SAK universe (like scissors, Alox, on an in-line Philips), that keeps you ever so slightly unsatisfied and wanting more than one model.

The Soldier is almost the same as the OH Trekker, but I feel like they appeal to different users - collecters vs. outdoors folk.  Even people that don't like SAKs for outdoor applications like the OHT.  I wonder what Victorinox will market towards those people.

I hope not.  I've always thought of them as the 21st Century SAK.

Mine too, I've only had a handful of the 111mm SAKs over the past few years and the oht was always my favorite. probably the next closest thing to the trekker is the forester, which is the only 111 i still have....for now :D

If I'm honest, I find the OHT a little awkward at this stage, both the opening and the size.  Maybe I'm overly accustomed to the 91 and 93 mm.  I'll give it some time
