My dog badger
on: August 16, 2019, 03:23:41 PM
My 8 year Jack Russell shi tzu cross has always been prone to coughs since we got him as an 8month old puppy, when we got him he was riddled with fleas and generally unwell (very bad cough) and scared of his own shadow.

But with a lot of love and attention he slowly grew in confidence and become the wonderful dog he is now. A few weeks ago he developed a moderate cough and I was not concerned as coughs have been a common occurrence through his life. But this cough didn’t shift so I took him to the vet Wednesday and she on examination detected a bad heart murmur and said this was very likely to be the cause of the cough.

He is booked in for a heart scan on Tuesday to help diagnose if he has heart disease or heart failure.
I have been heart broken since Wednesday as he is my constant companion and too young to lose.

I lost my last dog of seventeen years in Feb 2012 and got badger within two weeks and here I am now facing the propect of losing him at only eight years old.

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

I'm sorry to hear this man.  I almost lost my Daisy a month or so ago.  She could barely get up and walk, and just getting from the house to the yard exhausted her to the point where she had to lay down in the grass and rest for a bit before getting up the energy to pee, then rest a bit more before doing the rest of her business.

Fortunately we managed to find a treatment that worked for her, because at 140 pounds she wasn't a dog that had any other options than to get by on her own power.  She's still not 100%, but then she never will be- she is a big, old dog and her best days are far behind her.  But, she's a lot better than she was, and she is now able to stand up and walk around again.

I hope the news about Badger is at least as good as the news I got about Daisy.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes, they are very much appreciated. Grant I’m glad you found a way forward to help daisy as it’s not easy seeing them struggle and I hope she continues to see improvement in her health.

I found this post from 2012 when I had not long lost tiger and found badger.

Thank you all, you have cheered me up a lot. Without going too much into my current personal circumstances what I will say is I have been very worried about him.and have been very much down in the dumps.  I have since had a long phone conversation with the vet that was very reminiscent of the scene in Marley and me where Owen Wilson is trying to tell the vet that they must do everything possible as Marley was not the average dog but special.

I hope come Tuesday I feel a right wally for worrying so much because things turn out not nearly as bad as the vet first thought.

Small dogs can be really, really tough. The cough is a warning, and you did him right to have looked into, you are a great friend in doing so.

My brother-n-law is also experiencing a chronic cough, could not shake, his wife took him to the clinic, found he had a touch of pneumonia and a heart valve leaking.  Medicine had it under control in a few days.

The short of it is, your pup is a heck lot better looking than my b-n-l!!! So he got to get better.
