Beautiful  :hatsoff:
Thank you very much, Greg!

They are beautiful fans. I love the way the gaps in the fan are huge, the world must of been a less litigious place then :D

Thank you very much, chip!

Indeed it was. North America and Europe produced some of the best air movers between 1890 and the Late 1940s. But, there are hundreds(still in existence) of archived newspaper articles about early electric fan related injuries and even a few deaths. If I had kids running about I would certainly hide the antique fans as they are, or solder a lot more steel wire around the cage to make them safer.  :)

I appreciate this type of work so thank you for posting up the pics.  You've done a really great job getting these lovely fans back into action and looking good.   :tu:
Thank you very much, Aloha! And you're certainly welcome!

Just saving history one piece at a time, and looking good doing so. :)

Beautiful work mate! I showed this thread and your work to my wife and she liked it too.. So the next question is, do you do this on customer order or do you fix them and put them up for sale?

[It's not failure if you learn something from it]

Thank you very much, kottskrapa!

Don't know why the quote didn't show in the earlier reply. Apologies. :ahhh

I think it is one of those situations where the labor involved would easily exceed and potential value in the fan. Until I can figure out how to turn the 32 hours into 10 hours, I'll just be restoring fans I already own to use at my house.  :)

Got started on the next fan restoration today. A 10" Emerson Jr. Parker "Bullwinkle" Bladed Cast Iron Oscillator. Blade is steel and the badge/oscillator disk/osc cap are brass. So I bought some "brass" and "gold" Rustoleum spray paints since the fan isn't worth having the blades plated. The "brass" paint looked really smurfy, so I went with the "gold", which isn't great, but will do until a better paint can be located.

Here is the video I took of it some time back as a "before" reference for the project.

I got this work done Monday.

Stripped the base, cage and blades. The base had the Emerson "Japan" finish, so I ended up wire-wheeling all of the remaining finish off before paint(it went to bare metal after wire wheeling).

Organizing parts and pieces, ready to try and rejuvenate the "Japaning" on the motor case/cap, since it was fairly intact.

Straightened the badge out and polished it up a bit. Definitely looks better than it did in the 'before video'.

Examining the windings and ready to polish the drive shaft. Also going to put a new head wire in tomorrow.

Parker "Bullwinkle" blade sanded to bare metal and prepped.

After the "gold" Rustoleum was applied.

Base after prepping and painting.

Cage after sanding, smoothing, prepping and painting. Looks odd in the pictures, but the color is gloss black.

Got to make a switch handle for it and cover the base(can't do the base until switch is done..err), but it is done for the most part. The Motor case has the original "Japan" finish, but the rest has been painted.

Case and base. You can see the difference in the Japan black on the motor case and my spray paint job on the oscillator gear box, base, and cage.

Cleaned the stator, might as well polish the rotor too. :ahhh

Polished up the brass oscillator shaft cap and oscillator wheel.

Base cleaned up and rivets for switch drilled out and temporary bolts added to get the position later.

Stuff for the base. Felt, main wire, and plug.

Finally got everything together with the 10" Emerson Jr.

Fixed the messed up switch assembly.

And the fan after some more cleaning and adjusting.

Video of the 10" Jr. with my old 8" Junior. You know you have the motors right when two completely different models are operating the exact same RPM.  :o

So this was one of my first fans ever bought. After fixing up a similar model for my dad(Emerson 73648 - same as my later version) for my dad, I decided to make my old Emerson just like his.
It started out with steel blades, nickle plated front cage badge, and nickle motor tag.

Purchased a set of brass blades from eBay.

And polished up.

Made sure they were also Improved Parker blades like the steel blades that were there.

Then Donald Coleman made a new cage badge in brass.

Fan running with brass blades installed.

New badge will be installed after cage is repainted.

Donald Coleman is making a new motor tag from brass to replace this nickel badge.

Base, cage, and handle are only to be repainted. The motor case, knuckle, and Oscillator parts havd the original Jappaned finish that polishes out well.

Began disassembly and assessment of parts last night. The rotor looks good! Some insulating varnish and new head wire should do the trick.

Got the Emerson 73648 completed. :woohoo:

Well. Nearly. Waiting on the exact repro embossed brass motor data tag from a professional fabricator.

Original steel Improved Parker blades.

Back of brass replacement.

Front of brass replacement.

Closeup of stamp.

After some initial polishing.

Trying on the brass Parkers.

Nice and balanced - rare I get that lucky.

Base definitely needed paint.

Motor case was fair, but oscillator box needed paint.

Front of motor case before.

State of the stator address - also got fiber washers situated beforehand.

Checking oscillator shaft parts - also got fiber washers situated beforehand.

Some major parts.

Soon more followed.

After scraping off old paint on base.

Sanded and smoothed base.

Base after several coats of paint.

Checking out the switch.

Cleaned and coil insulated with clear varnish.

Switch installed. Yeah, not very pretty, but it is safe(also grounded now), so at least there is that.

Stator was removed, cleaned, clear varnished, and headwire soldered on.

Oscillator after paint. I had taped off the knurled adjustment wheel, since its' finish was fine.

Fan coming together. Oscillator collar, and arm touched up, with brass pieces polished.

Leather blade to rotor seal was shot.

Cut a new one out of some top-grain hide and installed it.

Cage after paint. Always amazed at how much paint is wasted with cages.

$38 replacement brass embossed badge.

The finishes I used on most the fan.

Painted the inside and outside of the base with textured Rust-O-leum before putting felt on.

Cleaned the motor case a little more so it shines a little closer to the new paint on base.

Ready for the magic tag.

Base with felt on. The gold paint on the cover ended up looking nice under the bat.

Close up of the front.

I think I am happy with it.

Yep. Happy with it.

She purrs like a crack addicted tiger in heat.

Thank you for looking!

Video of it running and Oscillating.

Got the Westinghouse started today. And instead of the usual method I use for fan resto(full disassembly and then restore), I decided to restore each part as I removed it, and then test fit it back on the fan to ensure that there would be no unforeseen issues when the fan is ready for final assembly.
Restoring each piece as I removed it left just the motor/oscillator case and base to strip, sand, and repaint. Usually I do those first, and am left with a ton of bits and pieces to work on before it goes back together. It feels less daunting having all the little frustrating stuff out of the way for the motor/base work next week.

Here is an imgur gallery with a break down of what everything is of anyone is interested.
