Squirt with a bit driver - too much?
on: August 26, 2019, 06:42:00 PM
So I finally got around to making this modification. Started with my Scalpel Squirt (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80683.msg1881145.html#msg1881145) and tried to add what I figured was most lacking - a bit driver.

The bit driver itself is the same one used on waves, which requires a fair bit of grinding and a pivot spacer to get it to fit. The only thing is it doubles the width of piece and might take it from an easy "pocket/keychain" tool to the next size up. To even out the other side, I added my bike key and a file, it probably has room for one more key but between grinding nail nicks for them and my current motorcycle key from my Style being too long, I've just used washers to space it and have a small gap.

For the size of the bit driver, you could easily fit a 3d Phillips and flat head, however, with my leatherman tread I'm able to carry 4 additional bits fairly easily and without risk of forgetting them which I think pushes this over the edge as useful and fits well into the minimal style that I'm going for. That being said the size growth is noticeable.

Either way I figured I'd post this to see what you guys think and if you have any suggestions on how to minimize or better carry this tiny pocket anchor. Happy to do a write up on how to make the mod as well if anyone is interested.

I can't help but thinking you would find modding a Style PS much easier. I know it doesn't have quite as much space on first glance..but there are a lot more areas to work with. I think you could easily slot in a 4mm bit driver into the clip section. I wish I had welding capability or I would do it myself. The slightly extra length would also give you enough grip length to potentially mod it as a Oho setup.

My first mods were done with a Style PS - https://imgur.com/gallery/iNqN5

The clip works naturally as a 4mm bit driver, and I even ordered some bits for that. The problem is that the point of my mods is usually to have maximum versatility while minimizing the number of things I carry around. Carrying around 4mm bits in my pocket, even in a tin or sheath takes away from the usefulness in my eyes. Also, the style only has one side that has the backplate, so with mods like adding keys as I did you need to constantly tighten up the knife pivots and get them to just the right tightness, something I lived with but found annoying. The final reason that I switched and don't think I'll look back is the scalpel holder. The Style's natural "sheath" for the blade did not work for accommodating the scalpel, with the flat side that should go against the metal frame being on the exposed side. You need to lose the file, and even then because of the contours on the scalpel holder it did not open very smoothly. You could use washers and spacers to help alleviate this, but in the end having the bit driver on the squirt has proved to be far more versatile.

I know that extra bits are still an issue, but I use a tread as a watch band. This allows me to carry 4-5 bits with me at all times:  https://imgur.com/gallery/Jl9KzCU

So, after comparing my mod to a regular squirt, it's not that much bigger. It's also been incredibly useful to always have flat head. The scalpel is also fantastic as I can cut through things I wouldn't usually try for worry of ruining my blade and all I have to do is pop a new one on and I'm ready to go.

Here are some images of the size comparison.

Also, I added a wheel striker to the tool. Now it serves as a fire starter in a pinch, but really will just be useful as a fidget toy and for lighting camp stoves when backpacking.

The flints are replaceable through the small set screw which also holds a small spring to keep the correct tension between the wheel striker and the flint.

That's a superb mod mate. :salute:  I think the flat bit holder makes great sense in a mini tool like this.

Alright a couple more changes - added a can opener to the gap behind the scalpel holder. Also replaced the scales with a metal ruler which changed the whole color scheme and luckily made it a little thinner. Just a little thicker than your standard squirt but with a lot more functionality. So now, the tools are:

Pliers/Wire Cutters
Scissors
2 Keys
File
Scalpel
Can Opener
Tweezers
Pin
Ruler (inches and MM)
Wheel Striker/Fire starter
2 Feet of strong thread and needle and awl (sewing machine needle)
Bit Driver (flat head and Phillips by default)
Couple of tiny but powerful mangers, more because they're fun and fit than useful.

Pretty good for the compact little guy that with the keys replaces my key chain. Besides a serrated blade and eyeglass screw driver, I think it has most of the functions of any of the bigger tools (let me know if I'm forgetting something - I know it doesn't have a saw on it but I've got 6 hacksaw blades that fit in the bit driver and can take with me when I'm backpacking or keep in the car, rarely need a saw in situations that won't cover). The mods are making me put together more of a tutorial in order to get my badges, let me know if there's interest and I can get to that sooner than later.
