Actually I stopped there to see if the guy was there that appeared to dabble in knives.  He likely hits garage sales and estate sales and TSA auctions he also has dealt with some China knives as Rough Rider and others.

I was looking to pick another Rough Rider Barlow as shared in the Trad Challenge.  Maybe to forward onto Ireland as a member there liked it. 

This time not as much stock, a fe old sheaths, some high priced Case models and this greased scale Case.  I think he thought it to be lower in synthetic. 

Just lucky for me.

Nice knives all!

I enjoy Case knives and have quite a few.  Particular favorites including the stockman, large stockman, and folding hunter patterns.  These knives in SS with G-10, canvas laminate, or similar handle materials are probably about as close to bomb-proof as slip joints get.

They just can't seem to displace a SAK in my pocket, though.  The SAK's complement of other tools in addition to blades is just too darn handy.

I know many here are savvy on how to identify the age of Case Knives, but I thought I might share this (looks like our thread is a sticky now) so when new folks come along asking, we can point them here so they can age their knife. If any corrections to this need to be made, please post for our edification. Thanks!

Pre 1920


1920-1940 or 1945 (some knife collectors argue about the year this stamps changed)


1940s Variations of this stamp


1945-1950


1950-1964


1965-1969


1970s - Case added 10 dots, each year a dot was removed.


1980's "Lightning" S in "Case" and "USA" dots above USA.


1990-mid 1993 THe date was stamped on the frame.


Mid 19930-1999 Dot system reintroduced.


2000-2009 In 2000, Case introduced a new tang date stamp: five X’s and five dots. From 2001 through 2005, one dot is removed each year. From 2006 through 2009, an X is removed each year. (From Case website)


2010-2019 The 2010 Tang Stamp design again features five X’s and five dots. From 2011 through 2015, one dot is removed for each year. From 2016 through 2019, an X is removed each year. (from Case website)

Identifying case patterns. This is information gleaned directly from Case Knives. Again, if corrections need to be made, post them for us.



The first number indicates the type of material used to make the handle.
The second digit gives the number of blades.
The last two or more digits indicate the factory pattern number.

Handle materials (first number)


1 = Solid Hardwoods
2 = Smooth Black Synthetic Thermoplastic Rubber
3 = Smooth Yellow Synthetic
4 = Smooth Synthetic
5 = Genuine Stag
6 = Jigged Bone, Jigged Synthetic, Jigged Laminate
6.5 = BoneStag
7/P = Curly Maple, Rosewood, Smooth Laminate
8 = Genuine Mother-of-Pearl
9 = Imitation Mother-of-Pearl
10 = Micarta, G-10
I = Ivory, Imitation Ivory
