Lanyard attachment
on: September 13, 2019, 10:52:32 AM
Greetings, Honourable Knights,

I am new to this forum and quite the novice in SAK matters, so I apologize in advance if this question - to which I cannot seem to find an answer anywhere - appears philistine: why does everyone (at least judging from the pictures on this forum) attach the lanyard by a loop around the key ring? At least for the small Vic ones, it would seem more obvious to fiddle them into the key ring as shown in the picture. This way the lanyard is more flexible and does not need constant re-tightening. I have attached all my Vic lanyards this way - am I gauche? Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

I do it so I can take it off the knife it is attached to and put it on another. That way, I have to make fewer lanyards.  I have to tie it directly to 108mms however; because of their lanyard tube.

Hey Simon,

Welcome to MTo and my compliments on your avatar name!   :)

I attach my lanyards to the keyring using the smallest S-clips I can find.  Nite Ize makes a nice one.

Good luck and let us know what kind of SAKs you're into.

Myron

Welcome to the forum Simon!  :waving:

I loop the lanyards for my 91mm knives through the key ring so that I can remove them easily if they start to get in the way when I'm using particular tools. For my 58mm knives, I usually loop the key ring through the lanyard. I used to loop my lanyards through a mini carabiner and then clip the carabiner to the key ring for quick removal, but when carrying the SAK in  my pocket, the lanyard would flop down next to the knife and I would have to spend time fishing around for it. Whatever method works for you is the way to go.

Thanks for your input, everyone. I am relieved I don't seem to be some kind of savage after all ;-)

I don't know myself where this weird affliction will lead me if it does not ebb away eventually (my wallet and I kind of hope it will). In these last two months I stocked up on 91 mm SAKs mostly, but some alox ones as well as smaller options (Executive, Sportsman, Manager, Waiter) found their way into my drawer/pockets too. And a few limited editions... As I said, I hope this will ebb away soon (and that my wife will never go through my drawer...).

It helps if you get them second hand. SAKs clean up very well...  :D

I like to use the small paracord clips on mine.

I use a slingstone hitch to attach lanyards to the ring. Just as easy as a cow hitch to put on and take off but doesn't need re-tightening all the time.

I am a new convert to the slingstone hitch to attach my lanyards, thanks to AmberDragon. No more cow hitch for me. I used to use 550 paracord for my SAK lanyards, but I recently switched to using 325 paracord as it's a smaller diameter and not as bulky. The only problem was that when I used the cow hitch/ ring hitch to attach them to the key ring of my SAKs, they would work themselves loose. Now that I'm using the slingstone hitch that doesn't happen anymore.

For me it depends on the size of the cord on the lanyard.

Once you go SAK, you'll never go back.

I use various ways to put a bit of cordage on my SAKs/MTs/knives.
