on: January 24, 2009, 08:11:08 PM
well as i was thinking of getting my first good multi, i was looking at sog's and SAK's.  but with they way money is now-a-days the less i spend the better.  so i landed a mp600 with carbied cutters in black oxide off ebay today.  i am kinda stoked, though my wife is not so much i wonder why   when i get it in and have some time to play with it i will put in my 2 cents on the black oxide with the carbide cutters...

I can't make my mind up about Gerber.

I'll be honest and say of the "Big 4" multitool brands, they make the least functional tools of all, and certain models (the Suspension, not the MP600 ecfiffer) have been known to explode, fall apart whatever, but...

I now have 4 of them and a fifth model on the way. 6 if you count the clutch. There is something about them that I like.

The design with the sliding plier heads is unique, and in some ways that makes up for the fact that the screwdrivers are pants.

So I'll be interested to hear how you get on with it ecfiffer. You'll surely be pleased with the plier opening mechanism if nothing else!
I used to come here a lot.

I wouldn't say the drivers are pants (on the MP series) they may not be that long but they function just fine :)

You know what - I'll give you that. It's the Flik really that's bad.

They are appalling on the Flik.  The worst drivers I have ever seen.

you know i was looking at the flik.  i was going to get the tool kit to go with it.  that was where i was looking for the oho blades.  yeah the drivers on the flik are a joke, but with the tool kit i think it would be better.  i do plan on getting the tool kit with the mp... i am really internested in the carbide cutters and how well they work.  but i will keep you all posted when they come in, sometime this week.  i wonder how much i will fiddle with them... i am a a touch of a fiddler my self, i will have to watch it so i don't bug my co-workers too much! :twak:

The carbide cutters are so hard that they can chip while cutting harder wire..

It helps if you be careful to keep hard wire down in the hard wire notch. (still doesn't prevent chipping, but it helps) :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Yeah, that's a good tip... The hard wire notch isn't too defined though...  :(

well it came in and i'm trying not to play with it too much.  my son has already taken the sheath.  hell he wanted to hold the gerber but i traded him a small cheap led light and a small screwdriver instead.  heck, my wee man is working on his EDC!!!  my first thoughts were that it is nice.  the black coating however was rubbing off on it.  i spent a little time this morning cleaning it with a terry cloth.  i do have to say that there were some burs on the main blade.  i have a co-worker that is my go-to guy for sharpening blades.  i will see what he can do.  i will be buying to bit kit for it in a while.  the implaments on it are all nice and open easy.  the carbide cutters are interesting in that they are not at too much of an edge like all the other MT's out there.  But i will put them through their paces and report back.  i'm likea frickin kid with a new toy...  but i will be good and not play with it in front of my kids...  sharp objects and little kids just dont seem to mix too well these days! :multi:
