AG Russell Knives
on: October 09, 2019, 02:11:01 AM
I have been a fan of AG Russell knives for quite some time. Being from Northwest Arkansas, it is kind of nice to b able to drive right up the road to visit the shop. My first real interaction with AG Russell himself was when I was a young police officer. He had just relocated to a new shop and the week after his grand opening, someone broke in and stole knives from his showroom...I was the first officer on scene and had my first chance to really talk to AG himself. Being a traditional knife nut, we hit it off quite well.

Before he died, I had many opportunities to talk to AG about knives, and have even had a chance to throw some input into a design. The Rancher (below) in a locking version was a conversation we had right after I bought the AG Russell Cowboy (sodbuster design).

On the company website, the knife seen in the still shot below is actually my Arkansas Hunter that I took a picture of while camping. I was cutting into a piece of fatwood and snapped the picture to email to him.

Over the years I have bought a lot of knives from his shop of various brands. I thought I might highlight some of the AG Russell knives themselves in this post.

Some of the Texas Ranger models I have collected.

Here you can see that some of these are pretty hefty knives!

Lockback Hunter. It seems so oversized, but this knife makes a GREAT camp knife.

Some of the War Eagle Blades economy line he offers.

More from my small collection.

Sadly, AG recently passed and his is missed by the community.

Very nice Spudley.

I had a few dealings with  A.G. over the years.I sold him a few knives a bought a few.I also traded a couple of knives. One was a Benchmark Rolox and another was a Randall Made.

He was a sly trader and I never seemed to come  out on top with any of those trades.Oh well, such is the nature of trading.

He was a giant in the industry and I was saddened when he died.

+1 to both of those sentiments.  I have a few A.G. Russell knives, and have been eyeing a few more.

Spuds how does that top Texas Ranger knife feel in hand?

Feels good. I thought it would feel blocky, but it isn't really at all. I have carried it as a back pocket blade before.

There's no mistaking for what reason that knife was designed.

One of my favorites! Here is my FH-1. I had one a few years ago and ended up trading it off...always regretted that. I bought this one on ebay and am really happy to have it!

Basically, it is a "Toothpick" type knife beefed up a little with a split bolster lock mechanism (see below). The blade on mine is ATS34 and it takes a super sharp edge and holds it quite well. The knife is very slicey and has great edge geometry.

In the original AG Russell advertisement for this knife, he stated that knives of this type were often concealed in a boot as it is slim and easily hidden.

One of the characteristics of the AG Russell folding knives that I have come to appreciate, is some models have a blade length that almost seems to defy the length of the handle. One example is the Texas Ranger model below. I had that honor of being able to handle the prototype of this knife months before it was announced and made available. Mr Russell had a knack for designing knives with a pivot point that allowed for a better blade length. The perspective on this is hard to discern from the photo below, but holding the knife in hand, you can see that the blade length is excellent in relation to the handle.
