Special Victorinox 58mm knives
on: December 26, 2008, 01:09:43 AM
This is a follow up from the topic; http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,7312.msg151957.html#new where these 2 knives were mentioned. I wanted to post some photos for everyone to see if they have not seen them before.

There were 2 special made 58mm knives with names printed on them, Physician Knife and Pharmacy Knife. These 2 knives were special ordered by a large pharmaceutical drug company. The fronts were screen printed in silver with the Vic shield and the name while on the back side were various drug advertisements.

The red scaled Physician Knife http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Physician+Knife has only a Pen blade and the Emergency Blade with normal inserts and keyring.

The yellow scaled Pharmacy Knife http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Pharmacy+Knife has a Pen Blade and the special Cut & Picker blade made especially for opening pill bottles and removing the cotton from them. This knife too has the normal inserts and keyring.

While these knives were made by Victorinox they were not regularly available to the public. They are hard to find but not rare per say. Most folks who have them do not even know it as they are usually mingled in with all the other advertisement knives made by the millions.

Thanks for the info.  SAKs have been around for such a long time that you have to wonder if even they have any idea what variations they have produced over the years.  I think Wenger have the excuse that a fire wiped out a load of records a number of years ago.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I have had each of those but accidentally gave them away to someone when I purged myself of thousands of extra 58mm models.  I'm pretty disapointed in myself for losing some collectible SAKs...

Thanks for the pics.  I was aware of them but I don't think either have passed through my hands.

Has anyone else got any weird tooled 58mm SAKs?

Here's a pic of one done for Nokia with a T6 driver.

I have one exactly like that. The bit fits most screws on a Nokia Cell Phone. Strange indeed!

Strictly speaking it's not an orange peeler I don't think, but I expect it can certainly function as one.

OK, here are a few more Special 58mm Victorinox knives I have.

The Victorinox Princess model is just like an Escort but it has solid scales with no inserts.

This is a "ECO" or "Nylon" scaled Classic with Hot Stamped Shield.

This is an Emergency Blade Classic- has an Emergency style blade replacing the regular pen blade.

This is 2 different Emergency style Escorts. One has the "SD" nail file while the other is the older style nail cleaner tip.

Here is my "Nokia" special Rally model with the torx bit end.

The tool has evolved from its original use and function but not in its design. Regardless of what everyone now thinks, the special blade was originally made for the pharmaceutical industry. It was later that the blade was found to have other uses, like being similar to the orange peeler blade from the executive. That is why the Swissarmy website lists it as such. It is in Victorinox best interest to keep the tool. Pill bottles have changed and the tools original purpose is basically obsolete.
Another example of a tool that has changed but remained the same; the Multi-Purpose Hook tool that has basically changed from its original designated use since most packages are no longer required to be tied up with string. The tool has been kept in the lineup and other uses have been found for it by guys like us who use these tools everyday in our lives.
Another example is the "Sacking Needle" or Marlin Spike as it now is called. The agriculture industry now has automated devices to do the same job so the tool has evolved into a Marlin Spike. If you look at true sailors rigging knives the spike does not have an "eye", while the Marlin Spike has kept its eye from the original days of being the Sacking Needle.

I love my MiniChamp. If I happen to find another use for one of the tools, so be it.

Rant over... :b2t: Anyone else have an unusual 58mm knife to share?  :D

I wish I could rant so eloquently :salute:  :D

I don't really collect 58mm SAKs but here's an unusual one.  The tool selection is alas just that of a plain Classic SD...

That really is an interesting knife. I have seen some custom work done on classics before by professionals and for resale in the general market. I must say that is one of the best examples of intricacy I have seen.  :tu:
As far as its weight, I have noticed the Vic Deluxe is rather heavy and it has brass metal scales with a fine lacquered finish. If the metal is not getting dinged very much on your knife, I would make an assumption it would be something like that. Gold and silver both tend to ding up and get scratched pretty easily due to their softness. Some of the intricate working around the edges might be that antique silver that jewelers use now-a-days.
Anyway, nice knife. Definitely a show and tell piece.  :salute:

That Emergency blade is really cool.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.
